Description
Laffite is a member of the Blackbeard Pirates, serving as the navigator of the crew and the captain of the fifth ship under Marshall D. Teach, known as Blackbeard. He is one of the Ten Titanic Captains and holds the epithet Demon Sheriff, a reference to his past as a police officer in the West Blue, where he was forced into exile after excessively violent and brutal enforcement. Laffite is a tall, slim figure with very pale skin, unusually dark red lips, and a distinctive habit of tap-dancing as he walks, often wearing a top hat. He wields pistols and a cane in combat and possesses the ability to fly by generating large wings from his back, which may emerge from his arms; the exact nature of this ability remains unclear—while some sources suggest a Devil Fruit, official databooks have not listed such a power, leading to speculation that Laffite may belong to an unknown winged race, possibly connected to ancient lineages like the Lunarians. He is intensely loyal to Blackbeard, demonstrated when he corrected a crewmate for using Teach’s former title and intervened to threaten those who questioned the captain’s authority. Laffite is highly elusive and skilled in infiltration: he managed to enter the holy land of Mary Geoise undetected, appeared before the Shichibukai and Marine admirals, and hypnotized Marines at Marineford to assist in Blackbeard’s plans. During the capture of Portgas D. Ace, Laffite notably refrained from direct combat, instead focusing on support and observation. He played a key role in the Blackbeard Pirates’ escape from Impel Down and participated in the Battle of Marineford, later helping the crew defeat the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates and ascend to the position of one of the Four Emperors. Laffite’s motivations are deeply tied to Blackbeard’s ambitions; some theories suggest he may be the mastermind behind Teach’s rise, perhaps even connected to the legacy of Rocks D. Xebec. Despite his long presence, much about his background and true abilities remains mysterious, and recent story developments have shown him undertaking secret missions, indicating his ongoing significance in the narrative.
