Description
Monkey·D·Ruffy is the main protagonist of the anime and manga series One Piece. He is the founder and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and dreams of finding the legendary treasure known as the One Piece in order to become the Pirate King, a title he equates with ultimate freedom.

Ruffy was born in Foosha Village in the East Blue. As a young boy, he idolized the pirate captain Red-Haired Shanks, who visited his village. After accidentally eating the Gum-Gum Fruit, a Devil Fruit that granted his body the properties of rubber at the cost of his ability to swim, Ruffy spent years training his new abilities. He received his iconic straw hat from Shanks as a promise to become a great pirate. Ruffy also gave himself a scar under his left eye to prove his courage to Shanks and his crew. His family includes his grandfather Monkey·D·Garp, a legendary Marine vice-admiral, his father Monkey·D·Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and his sworn brothers Portgas·D·Ace and Sabo.

Ruffy’s personality is defined by a carefree, optimistic, and fun-loving nature. He has an enormous appetite and often thinks with his stomach, leading to comedic moments. Despite his seemingly simple-minded demeanor, he is far from dim-witted and frequently demonstrates a sharp, intuitive understanding of people and situations. When his friends are threatened or during serious battles, he becomes intensely serious and aggressive. His most defining trait is his unwavering loyalty to his crew and anyone he considers a friend; he will risk his life without hesitation to protect them. His primary motivation is the pursuit of freedom, and he is driven by a strong sense of justice, often helping oppressed people and toppling tyrants.

As the central figure of the story, Ruffy’s journey propels the entire narrative. He sets sail at age seventeen from the East Blue, recruiting a diverse and loyal crew: the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator Nami, sniper Usopp, chef Vinsmoke Sanji, doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook, and helmsman Jimbei. Throughout his voyage, he boldly challenges the three major powers of the world: the Marines, the Seven Warlords of the Sea, and the Four Emperors. He has faced and defeated numerous powerful antagonists including Arlong, Crocodile, Rob Lucci, Donquixote Doflamingo, and Kaido. His actions constantly shift the balance of power, and after a two-year training period, he puts Fish-Man Island and Wano Country under his protection, amasses a grand fleet, and is eventually recognized as one of the Four Emperors.

Ruffy undergoes significant development over the course of the story. Early in his journey, he is reckless and relies almost entirely on his rubber powers. After suffering a devastating loss during the Marineford War, particularly the death of his brother Ace, he becomes more sober and determined. He spends two years training under the former pirate Silvers Rayleigh on the island of Rusukaina, mastering all three types of Haki: Observation Haki, which grants a sixth sense and the ability to sense others; Armament Haki, which creates an invisible armor and allows the user to hit Devil Fruit users; and the rare Conqueror's Haki, which can overwhelm the willpower of others. His emotional and strategic maturity grows, though he retains his core cheerful and adventurous spirit.

Ruffy’s abilities are centered on his rubber body. He can stretch any part of his body over long distances, allowing for powerful, flexible attacks. His signature technique is the Gum-Gum Pistol, where he slingshots his fist at an opponent. He is immune to blunt force impacts and electricity but remains vulnerable to sharp cuts and extreme temperatures. Over time, he develops a series of advanced techniques called Gears. Gear Second accelerates his blood flow to dramatically increase speed and strength. Gear Third inflates his bones to deliver enormous attacks, though it temporarily shrinks him. Gear Fourth combines his rubber body with Armament Haki and muscle inflation to create powerful forms such as Boundman, Snakeman, and Tankman, granting immense power and speed at the cost of heavy stamina drain. Eventually, Ruffy awakens his Devil Fruit, which is revealed to be the legendary Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. In his awakened form, Gear Fifth, his body gains even greater freedom and elasticity, allowing him to fight with cartoon-like physics and manipulate his surroundings in surreal ways. This form is associated with the ancient god of liberation, Joy Boy, and heralds Ruffy as the second coming of that figure. His current bounty is three billion berries, reflecting the extreme threat he poses to the World Government.
