Description
Doctor Hogback is a renowned figure from the West Blue, known throughout the world as a genius surgeon. He served as one of the three Mysterious Four of the Thriller Bark Pirates under the command of the warlord Gecko Moria. Physically, he is a tall, rotund man with extremely thin limbs, standing at 223 centimeters. He has a long, beak-like nose, sharp teeth, pointed ears, and slicked-back black hair. His typical attire includes a fishnet vest, purple leather pants, a black tie, a purple feathered cape, and a white surgical mask worn below his chin. In his younger years, during the height of his medical career, his appearance was notably different and more conventional.
Personality-wise, Hogback is the embodiment of the mad scientist archetype. He is immensely arrogant and pathologically proud of his reputation as a genius, using his distinctive laugh, "Fosfosfosfos." Despite having saved countless lives with his miraculous surgical skills, he viewed his patients as a mere annoyance to be tolerated for the sake of wealth and fame, and he considered other doctors incompetent. His most defining trait is his complete lack of medical ethics and respect for life, living or dead. He sees the corpses he reanimates not as individuals but as disposable tools and slaves to be ordered around and discarded at will. His narcissism and cruelty are particularly evident in his relationship with his creation, the zombie Victoria Cindry, whom he supposedly loves only for her physical beauty and forces to perform humiliating acts.
Hogback's descent into villainy began from an obsessive infatuation with the famous actress Victoria Cindry. When she rejected his marriage proposal due to having a fiancé and then died in an accident, he became deeply depressed and abandoned his medical practice. This tragedy led him to accept an offer from Gecko Moria. His primary motivation is his selfish obsession with Cindry. He agreed to help Moria create an undead army in exchange for the warlord using his shadow-manipulating powers to reanimate her corpse. From that point, Hogback became a loyal follower of Moria, using his skills not to heal but to build the zombie army, believing he had finally conquered death.
Within the story of the Thriller Bark arc, Hogback serves as a major antagonist and a direct foil to Tony Tony Chopper. Initially, Chopper holds Hogback in the highest regard as a legendary doctor and defends him when others are suspicious. Hogback lies to the Straw Hats, claiming he studies zombies to one day revive the dead and heal broken hearts, a lie that Chopper eagerly believes. The truth is revealed in his laboratory, where Chopper witnesses his disregard for life and his grotesque experiments. This confrontation forces Chopper to reject Hogback completely, refusing to even acknowledge him as a doctor. After Oars, the special zombie, is unleashed, Hogback is accidentally crushed by the giant's foot. Though he survives, he is left buried in rubble and ultimately flees Thriller Bark alongside Moria and Absalom as it collapses.
Hogback's key relationship is with his master, Gecko Moria, whom he serves with genuine loyalty. He is also responsible for the physical augmentation of his comrade Absalom, giving him his powerful animalistic body. His most twisted relationship is with the zombie of Victoria Cindry. While claiming to love her, he constantly abuses her, treating her as a servant who must lick the floor as proof of obedience. He is also the primary antagonist to Chopper, representing everything a doctor should not be. Hogback has no combat abilities and does not possess a Devil Fruit. He relies entirely on his surgical genius and the zombies under his command to protect him. His medical expertise, however, is extraordinary. Beyond simple surgery, he can fuse different creatures and inanimate objects to create powerful hybrids, modify living bodies to enhance their combat abilities, and preserve corpses in a pristine state for over a decade without decomposition. He also designed a cockpit system to be implanted inside the giant Oars's stomach, allowing Moria to pilot him from within.
