Description
Commodore Brandnew, also known as Brannew, is a high-ranking officer stationed at Marine Headquarters. His primary function within the organization is analytical and administrative, as he is the officer responsible for assessing the threat level of pirates and assigning the monetary bounties to their wanted posters. He is a career Marine who takes his role as the arbiter of danger in the world seriously.
In terms of appearance, Brandnew is a tall, lean but solidly built man with tanned skin. Among his most distinctive features are his large lips, sharp green sideburns that point upwards, and a full head of dark green curly hair that recedes from his forehead, creating a prominent widow's peak. His eyes are almost always hidden behind a pair of dark sunglasses, and later, a pair of conical lenses. His standard attire consists of a collared shirt with blue and white vertical stripes, pink trousers, and matching pink and blue shoes, often adorned with epaulets and gold tassels, which serve as a modified version of the standard Marine uniform. During the Summit War of Marineford, he wore the formal white Marine coat over his shoulders, like many other officers, and was armed with a sword.
Personality-wise, Brandnew is defined by his professionalism and a rigid, absolute sense of justice. He performs his duties with meticulous care and is deeply committed to the eradication of evil. This was evident when he set Monkey D. Luffy's first bounty; while acknowledging the unprecedented sum of 30 million berries was high for the East Blue, he argued that the threat was severe enough to warrant immediate action before the pirate grew stronger. He holds the Marine organization in extremely high regard and becomes personally outraged by actions that humiliate or defy the institution, such as when Luffy infiltrated Marine Headquarters a second time and rang the Ox Bell as an act of defiance.
Brandnew’s role in the story is largely that of an information officer and strategic reporter. He is frequently seen leading briefings for high-ranking officials or delivering critical intelligence directly to the Fleet Admiral. One of his most significant contributions is announcing Monkey D. Luffy's first bounty to the world after the events in the East Blue. During the Marineford Arc, he participates directly in the battle against the Whitebeard Pirates, demonstrating that despite his desk work, he is a capable combatant and part of the elite force of 100,000 soldiers protecting the execution site.
Following the war, his role shifts to damage control. He is shown reporting to Fleet Admiral Sengoku about the massive prison break at Impel Down, informing him that Chief Warden Magellan was severely wounded and that dangerous criminals from Level Six had escaped. However, he broaches this subject with visible fear, as he must also relay the World Government's controversial order to suppress this information from the public to maintain social trust, a directive that enrages Sengoku. He later leads a meeting discussing Luffy's heritage and his connections to the revolutionary leader Dragon, the late Ace, and Vice Admiral Garp, expressing frustration at the Marine's inability to capture him.
In terms of character development, Brandnew has been present across several major story arcs, showing signs of aging and a change in rank. He was first seen as a Lieutenant Commander before the timeskip, but after the two-year time jump, he has been promoted to the rank of Commodore. His physical appearance reflects this passage of time, as he has gained small scars on his forehead, a round earring in his left ear, and updated his choice of eyewear.
While not a frontline fighter on the level of Admirals, Brandnew possesses notable abilities for an officer of his rank. As a Commodore, he has command over numerous lower-ranking soldiers. He is a trained swordsman, having wielded a blade effectively during the chaotic battles of Marineford. His most critical ability, however, is his institutional authority and analytical mind, which allow him to determine the bounties that define the threat levels of pirates across the world, directly influencing how the Marines and bounty hunters prioritize their targets.
