Description
Gladius is a fictional character from the Donquixote Pirates, serving as an officer within the elite Pica Army, also known as the Heart or Black Pepper unit, which specializes in special operations and assassination. His name is derived from the Spanish word for sword, which suits his role as a sharp and precise instrument of his master's will.
Physically, Gladius cuts a distinctive steampunk-inspired figure. He typically wears a long, dark blue overcoat decorated with metal rings and gears, along with matching boots. His face is often partially concealed by a mask with round lenses, and he wears a hat or helmet. This headwear rarely stays intact for long, as his volcanic temper frequently causes his spiky hair to expand and burst through it. Visible stitching-like scars around his eyes add to his severe and intimidating appearance.
Gladius possesses a deeply rigid and explosive personality. His defining trait is his extremely short temper, which triggers his Devil Fruit powers in moments of anger. He holds punctuality, precision, and the strict adherence to plans in the highest regard, and he despises anyone who deviates from orders or is unpunctual. This disgust for disorder even extends to his own allies, as seen when he unhesitatingly shot his comrade Baby 5 to stop her chaotic attack on their captain, Doflamingo. Despite his general ruthlessness, he has a surprisingly low tolerance for gruesome imagery and was visibly disturbed when he learned of Trafalgar Law hiding in a pile of corpses as a child.
His loyalty to the family patriarch, Doflamingo, whom he calls Young Master, is the core of his identity. He is fanatically devoted and quick to seek revenge against anyone he perceives as a traitor, such as Violet. This loyalty, however, is surprisingly shallow in practice, as he once failed to recognize his own captain when the samurai Kin'emon disguised himself as Doflamingo. His relationships with other family members are complex. He has a strange, blunt rapport with Baby 5, willing to shoot her one moment and chat with her the next. He also played a minor role in Law's backstory, as Doflamingo assigned Gladius the task of teaching the young Law how to use firearms and artillery.
Gladius is a formidable fighter, a testament to his status as a high-ranking officer. His primary power comes from the Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, the Pamu Pamu no Mi, also known as the Pop-Pop Fruit or Bomb-Bomb Fruit. This ability allows him to cause any inorganic object he touches, as well as his own body parts, to swell up like a balloon and then rupture in a powerful explosion. He is highly creative in combat, using his power to blow up his own helmet to create deadly shrapnel, turning the ground into a minefield, or inflating his limbs for close-quarters blasts. His most desperate technique involves inflating his entire body into a massive, spherical bomb. A unique and dangerous aspect of his power is that his hair can be coated with a paralyzing agent; when he explodes his scalp, he launches these needle-like, poisonous hairs at his opponents.
During the events of the Dressrosa arc, Gladius was a key antagonist tasked with suppressing the rebellion. He cornered the toy soldier Kyros and fought against several members of the Straw Hat alliance, including Nico Robin and Cavendish. His final confrontation was with the barrier-wielding pirate Bartolomeo. After a destructive clash where Gladius used his full-body explosion technique, Bartolomeo managed to encase him in a barrier and defeat him with a powerful punch, leaving Gladius defeated and unconscious as Doflamingo's reign collapsed.
