Description
Duc Caborage is a significant character from the mink tribe introduced during the Zou arc of One Piece. He is one of the two rulers of the island of Zou, specifically governing as the diurnal, or daytime, ruler. His co-ruler is Maître Chapivère, who governs the island at night. This unique system exists because the two leaders hold a deep-seated animosity toward one another; Wanda explains that the rotating schedule was put in place because they detest each other so much that they would end up killing one another if they were to meet.
As a mink, Caborage is an anthropomorphic canine, bearing a strong resemblance to a dog. His personality is that of a stalwart and seasoned warrior, carrying the weight of his people's protection on his shoulders. He possesses a regal air appropriate for his title of duke, yet he interacts directly with outsiders, such as Monkey D. Luffy, engaging in a serious conversation about Luffy's connection to the legendary pirate Shanks, whom Caborage had sailed with in the past. This connection to a former member of the Roger Pirates and a current Emperor of the Sea hints at his own long and storied history on the seas.
Caborage's primary motivation is the defense of his homeland and his people. This is most clearly demonstrated during the assault on Zou by the pirate Jack, one of the lead performers of the Beasts Pirates. When Jack attacked the island in search of the ninja Raizo, the mink tribe fought back fiercely. The musketeer squad engaged Jack's forces, but it was Caborage who ultimately confronted Jack directly on the battlefield. Described as a monster of immense strength, Caborage was powerful enough to fight on par with Jack, whose bounty at the time was a staggering one billion berries, double that of Luffy's then-current bounty. Despite his power, the battle did not end in a decisive victory; Jack resorted to using a deadly chemical weapon to incapacitate the minks, forcing their defeat through cruel means rather than a contest of pure strength.
The consequences of this battle had a permanent impact on the duke. To protect his friend, the samurai Raizo, Caborage endured relentless torture at the hands of Jack's forces rather than betray the ninja's hiding place. As a result of this ordeal, he lost his left leg. This sacrifice is a testament to his unshakeable loyalty and his warrior's code, embodying the minks' profound respect for friendship and their refusal to betray allies, no matter the cost. His role in the story is therefore multifaceted: he is a respected leader, a former crewmate of a yonko, a fierce combatant who held his own against one of Kaido's top commanders, and a symbol of the minks' enduring and honorable spirit.
