Marshall D. Teach, better known as Barbanera, is one of the most formidable and complex antagonists in the series. He is the admiral of the Blackbeard Pirates and, following the conclusion of the Marineford war, one of the Four Emperors ruling the New World. His name and theme are directly inspired by the historical English pirate Edward Teach.
Teach is an orphan, born on an unspecified island in the Grand Line. At the age of twelve, he joined the Whitebeard Pirates, one of the most powerful crews in the world, with a singular goal. Having learned of the Yami Yami no Mi, a logia-type Devil Fruit considered the most dangerous, he spent over two decades as a low-profile member of the second division, patiently waiting for the fruit to appear. His patience was rewarded when a crewmate named Thatch found the fruit. Teach murdered Thatch to claim it for himself, a betrayal that forced him to flee the crew. During this period of his life, he was also responsible for giving the future Emperor Shanks the three scars over his left eye during a battle.
The personality of Barbanera is a contradictory and fascinating mix of traits.
