Description
Gecko Moria is a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the captain of the Thriller Bark Pirates. Born in the West Blue, Moria was raised by the people of Ringo in the Wano Country, where he was given the name Kozuki Moria due to his great strength. He set out to sea with his own pirate crew but returned to Wano to challenge Kaido, one of the Four Emperors. The battle ended in catastrophic defeat, and Moria lost every member of his crew. This traumatic event had a profound and lasting impact on him. He came to believe that because living beings are alive, they will inevitably be lost, and that having nothing to lose is the only way to avoid that pain. Consequently, Moria grew to rely heavily on external forces rather than his own strength, adopting a philosophy of relying on others to achieve his goals.

His personality is defined by a combination of ambition and profound laziness. While he still dreams of becoming the Pirate King, he prefers to have others do the work for him, with a favorite phrase being You do it. This laziness extends to his fighting style, as he often sends his own shadow or his zombie subordinates to battle in his place. Although he appears maniacal and constantly grins, Moria is deeply traumatized by the loss of his original crew and has become cynical about the dangers of the Grand Line. Despite his cruelty and twisted methods, he is genuinely caring toward his closest subordinates, viewing Perona as a daughter figure and risking his life to rescue Absalom.

In the story, Moria serves as the primary antagonist of the Thriller Bark Saga. Residing on Thriller Bark, the world's largest ship, he spent years building an army of zombies. With the help of the genius surgeon Dr. Hogback, he stole the shadows of countless people using the powers of the Kage Kage no Mi, implanting them into corpses to create obedient and powerful soldiers. His goal was to create a crew that could not die, specifically to build a zombie powerful enough to defeat his old rival, Kaido. He came into conflict with the Straw Hat Pirates when he stole the shadows of several crew members, including Monkey D. Luffy and Brook, leading to his eventual defeat. Following his defeat, he participated in the Summit War of Marineford, but was later stripped of his Warlord title when the World Government deemed him too weak, leading to an assassination attempt from which he escaped. Years later, Moria invaded the territory of the Blackbeard Pirates to rescue his subordinate Absalom, only to learn of his death.

The key relationships in Moria's life are with his three most trusted officers, whom he raised and commanded. Perona commands the zombie animals and has been under his care since childhood, seeing him as a father figure. Absalom commands the soldier and general zombies, showing great loyalty to Moria, who in return risked everything to save him. Dr. Hogback is the genius surgeon who creates the zombie corpses, driven by Morias promise to resurrect a lost loved one. Moria also harbors an intense rivalry with Kaido, whose defeat of him years ago set Moria on his current path.

Moria's character development across the series shows a tragic fall from grace. He was once an overconfident and headstrong pirate captain who challenged an Emperor directly and cared deeply for his living crewmates. The annihilation of his crew left him a shell of his former self, transforming him into a lazy, manipulative schemer who replaced trust and camaraderie with control and undeath. His defeat by Luffy, who refused to abandon his crew, served as a direct challenge to Moria's nihilistic philosophy. Later, after losing his Warlord status, being targeted for death, losing his base of operations, and finally losing Absalom, Moria is left as a wandering pirate driven by revenge against the Blackbeard Pirates.

As the Kage Kage no Mi user, Moria possesses a wide array of notable abilities centered on shadow manipulation. He can physically cut a persons shadow from their body using a giant pair of scissors; anyone who loses their shadow will disintegrate if exposed to sunlight. The severed shadow can then be implanted into a corpse, turning it into a zombie soldier that inherits the fighting skills of the shadows original owner. Moria can also manipulate his own shadow, creating a separate entity called Doppleman, which can attack enemies and act as a decoy. He can instantly swap positions with his shadow, making him difficult to hit. Using a technique called Shadow Revolution, he can infiltrate his own shadow into the shadow of a zombie like the giant Oars, allowing him to control the zombies body and stretch its limbs like rubber. His most desperate and powerful technique is Shadows Asgard, where he absorbs a massive number of stolen shadows into his own body, becoming a giant of immense strength capable of splitting an island with a single punch. However, this technique requires enormous mental control, and absorbing too many shadows can cause him to lose his sanity. Furthermore, as Jinbe later noted, Moria's over-reliance on borrowed power had caused his own combat abilities to atrophy significantly.
