Description
Hody Jones is a character from the fictional universe of the manga and anime One Piece. He is a great white shark fish-man and serves as the primary antagonist of the Fish-Man Island storyline. Born thirty years before the main events of the story in the Fish-Man District of the Ryugu Kingdom, Hody grew up in a lawless and violence-prone environment. Despite never experiencing direct persecution or personal trauma at the hands of humans, he was raised in a community that instilled a deep and abiding hatred for humanity, idolizing figures who attacked humans as heroes. This upbringing cultivated in him an extreme and unwavering fish-man supremacist ideology.
As a character, Hody Jones is defined by his vicious, brutal, and deeply hypocritical nature. He is a radical believer in the absolute superiority of fish-men over humans and rejects any possibility of coexistence or peace between the two races. His personality is notably shallow in terms of personal motivation; his hatred is not born from a specific wrong done to him but is instead an inherited prejudice, a hollow echo of the grievances of past generations. He fears the idea that the animosity between fish-men and humans might fade, believing that maintaining this hatred is essential to the pride of his kind. Hody is ruthless and lacks any sense of camaraderie, willingly using his own subordinates as shields to protect himself from attacks and showing no loyalty to anyone who disagrees with his views. He even despises fellow fish-men who show sympathy toward humans, considering them traitors to their race.
Hody's primary motivation is to exact revenge against humanity for perceived historical sins and to seize control of Fish-Man Island to use as a base for his war against humans. He seeks to overthrow the Ryugu Kingdom, which under King Neptune and the late Queen Otohime sought peaceful relations with humanity. To this end, he orchestrated a long-term conspiracy that involved the assassination of the peace-seeking Queen Otohime ten years before the main story. He killed her himself and then framed a human pirate for the murder, successfully turning public opinion on Fish-Man Island further against humans. He also stole a cache of a dangerous drug called Energy Steroid from the royal palace to empower himself and his followers. Hody claims to have inherited the will of the infamous pirate Arlong, whom he idolized as a child, though his own behavior proves far more extreme and less principled than his predecessor. While Arlong valued his crew and sought to dominate humans for profit and pride, Hody is driven purely by a desire for genocide and destruction.
Within the story, Hody Jones acts as the central figure of the New Fish-Man Pirates, a crew he formed with other radical fish-men from his childhood. His key relationships are defined by opposition or manipulation. He views King Neptune and the royal family as weak and cowardly for seeking peace, and he despises Princess Shirahoshi after witnessing her unique ability to communicate with Sea Kings. He enters into a temporary alliance of convenience with Vander Decken IX, a humanoid fish-man pirate with a powerful Devil Fruit ability, solely to use him to assassinate Shirahoshi. His relationship with his idol Arlong is one of twisted admiration, though the octopus fish-man Hatchan, a former crewmate of Arlong, condemns Hody's actions and ideology as a perversion of everything Arlong stood for. Jinbe, another legendary fish-man pirate, represents everything Hody is not, as Jinbe seeks understanding between species while Hody foments hatred. The entire conflict is precipitated by the arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates, whose defeat of Arlong years prior gave Hody a pretext to escalate his plans. His primary antagonist in the final battle is Monkey D. Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hats.
Hody Jones undergoes significant physical transformation over the course of his storyline, largely due to his abuse of the drug Energy Steroid. This drug, which doubles the user's strength with each pill taken at the cost of their lifespan, enables his initial rise to power. He consumes a massive quantity of the drug, which first turns his black hair white and dramatically increases his muscle mass to monstrous proportions. Ultimately, when the drug's effects wear off after his defeat, the accumulated toll on his body manifests as rapid, extreme aging, leaving him a withered, frail old man barely able to move. This physical decay mirrors the hollow nature of his ideology, which leaves him with nothing but his baseless hatred.
In terms of notable abilities, Hody possesses all the natural advantages of his fish-man physiology. These include superhuman strength ten times that of a base human, the ability to breathe underwater, exceptional swimming speed, and enhanced durability. As a great white shark fish-man, he also possesses sharp, rapidly regenerating teeth and a vicious biting attack. He is a practitioner of Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujutsu, martial arts that allow him to manipulate water for combat. His techniques include Soshark, a powerful crushing grip; Yabusame, where he flicks water droplets with the force of arrows; Uchimizu, a high-velocity water bullet; and Mizugokoro: Murozame, where he throws water that takes the form of a pack of sharks to attack his opponent. He is also a skilled marksman, having assassinated Queen Otohime with a sniper shot from a great distance. His primary weapon is a red trident, and he also uses a large curved blade called Kirisame, which he mounts on his dorsal fin for high-speed slashing attacks underwater. However, his most defining ability is his reliance on the Energy Steroid, which can temporarily amplify his power exponentially, though at the ultimate cost of his vitality. In his drugged states, he becomes powerful enough to briefly contend with Luffy and deliver devastating blows, but his skills remain amateurish compared to true masters of fish-man karate like Jinbe, relying on brute force rather than technique.
