TV-Series
Description
Sir Crocodile, also known as Mr. 0, is a major figure in the world of pirates and a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Tall and imposing, he carries himself with the air of a sophisticated and ruthless mafia boss, usually seen in a pinstripe vest with a long, dark fur coat draped over his shoulders. His face is marked by a long, stitched scar across the bridge of his nose, and in place of his left hand is a massive hook made of a gold alloy, a signature weapon and tool of his trade.
His background is one of early ambition and crushing defeat. In his youth, Crocodile rose through the ranks of pirates with great speed and ferocity, achieving the title of Warlord while still in his twenties. He was present twenty-two years before the main storyline at the execution of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. However, his dream of becoming the Pirate King himself was shattered when he challenged the mighty Emperor Whitebeard and suffered a humiliating defeat. This loss fundamentally altered his worldview, causing him to abandon what he saw as the romantic and foolish ideals of dreams, ambition, and trust in others.
Driven by his new cynical philosophy, Crocodile relocated to the desert kingdom of Arabasta. He publicly became a national hero, protecting citizens from pirates as part of his Warlord duties. Behind this façade, he created the secret crime syndicate Baroque Works under the codename Mr. 0. His true motivation was not treasure or fame, but pure military power. He plotted for years to destabilize and conquer Arabasta, intending to use the kingdom’s ancient Poneglyph to locate the沉睡的 ancient weapon Pluton, a warship said to possess enough power to shake the world.
Crocodile's personality is defined by his cynical, calculating, and pitiless nature. He holds a deep contempt for weakness and what he perceives as foolishness, believing that trusting others and declaring grandiose dreams are idiotic acts. He is a cruel and sadistic opponent who derives pleasure from toying with his enemies, often leaving them to die slowly in elaborate traps. He has a very low tolerance for those who insult him, claiming to have killed everyone who ever did. Despite his sophisticated and composed demeanor, he is prone to fits of arrogance and mockery, using his signature "kuhahaha" laugh. This overconfidence proved to be a critical flaw, as he repeatedly underestimated the willpower of Monkey D. Luffy, ultimately leading to his downfall.
His role in the story is primarily that of the main antagonist of the Arabasta Saga. He is the first enemy to ever completely defeat Luffy, doing so twice, and his plan to plunge Arabasta into a brutal civil war serves as a major early test of the Straw Hat Pirates' resolve. After his defeat by Luffy, he was stripped of his Warlord title and arrested, becoming the only major villain up to that point who was not simply defeated but also captured by the World Government.
Crocodile maintains a network of key relationships, almost all of which are purely transactional. He viewed Nico Robin, whom he partnered with to decipher the Poneglyph, as nothing more than a useful tool. He treated his Baroque Works subordinates with a similarly harsh pragmatism, punishing failure with immediate execution. The only person he has shown a consistent and willing partnership with is his former assassin, Mr. 1, Daz Bonez. After his arrest, he notably refused a chance to escape, showing a detached apathy toward his imprisonment. He later agreed to help Luffy escape from the great prison Impel Down only because Emporio Ivankov, the "Miracle Worker," holds a secret from Crocodile's past that he desperately wishes to remain hidden.
Crocodile has shown significant development after his defeat. During the Summit War of Marineford, he went from a passive prisoner to an active and chaotic participant. While he initially sought to kill Whitebeard as revenge for his past humiliation, he eventually set aside this goal. Showing a surprising and complex turn, he actively fought against the Marines to aid Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates, saving Ace's life and protecting Luffy from the deadly attacks of both Dracule Mihawk and Admiral Akainu. He claimed his actions were motivated solely by a desire to deny the Marines a clean victory. Following the war, his old ambition was reignited, and he declared his intention to return to the treacherous seas of the New World.
As a fighter, Crocodile is exceptionally formidable. He is the user of the Suna Suna no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform his body into sand. This ability grants him near-intangibility, as physical attacks will simply pass through his sandy form. His primary weakness is any liquid, which can solidify his sand body and allow him to be struck. He has mastered his fruit to a high degree, allowing him to unleash a variety of devastating techniques such as creating massive sandstorms, firing blades of sand that can slice through stone, and drying any object he touches with his right hand. This dehydration ability can suck the moisture from a living being in seconds, turning them into a withered mummy. He is also proficient in using his left-hand hook, which houses a potent scorpion venom capable of melting rock. Later in the series, it is confirmed that Crocodile possesses both Armament and Observation Haki, solidifying his status as a powerful fighter even among the elite pirates of the New World. After the dissolution of the Seven Warlords system, he co-founded a new organization called Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk, seeking to build a new military power base from which to operate.
