Description
Kurozumi Tama is a young girl from the Wano Country arc in One Piece. She is first introduced in the Amigasa Village region of the ruined Kuri area. Tama is approximately eight years old at the time of her appearance and is a resident of the impoverished, polluted wasteland left in the aftermath of Kaido and Kurozumi Orochi’s takeover. She is an orphan who lives in a small, rundown hut with her pet komainu, a lion-dog creature named Komachiyo, whom she raised since he was a cub. Her name carries the Kurozumi family name, which places her among the descendants of a persecuted clan, though she herself is unaware of the full political weight of that lineage for much of the story.
Tama’s personality is remarkably resilient, optimistic, and kindhearted despite the harsh living conditions. She is cheerful, polite, and exhibits a strong sense of loyalty to those who show her kindness. From the moment she meets Luffy, she offers him the little food she has—a bowl of rice she had been saving for a special occasion—showing her generous and selfless nature. She often speaks with an innocent, childlike wonder, referring to Luffy as “Ace’s brother” with great admiration because Portgas D. Ace had visited her village years earlier and befriended her. Tama is also stubborn and brave, repeatedly insisting that she wants to become a “bewitching kunoichi” (a female ninja) like the legendary Kozuki Hiyori. She does not fully grasp the danger of the battles around her but refuses to be treated as a helpless child, often putting herself at risk to help others.
Her primary motivation throughout the Wano arc is to see her homeland freed from the tyranny of Orochi and Kaido, and to stop the suffering of the people in her village, who are slowly starving due to poisoned water and destroyed farmland. Tama dreams of a day when everyone in Wano can eat their fill of red bean soup again. Her personal goal is to grow strong enough to be useful in the coming battle, and she is deeply inspired by Ace’s promise that he would return to free Wano. After Ace’s death, she transfers that hope onto Luffy, seeing him as the one who will complete what Ace started.
In the story’s progression, Tama serves as a key emotional anchor for the alliance’s invasion of Onigashima. She sneaks onto Kaido’s fortress hidden in Luffy’s clothing, determined to help despite being told to stay behind. Once inside, she becomes a pivotal tactical asset. Her role shifts from a sympathetic victim of Wano’s oppression to an active participant in the raid’s success. She reunites with Luffy and the other Straw Hat crew members, forming especially close bonds with Luffy, Zoro, and Nami, who treat her protectively but also respect her courage.
Tama’s most significant relationship is with the memory of Ace. She recalls his visit with deep fondness, and her loyalty to his brother Luffy is immediate and absolute. She also forms a strong bond with Nami, who takes on a maternal caregiving role toward her during the battle. Another key relationship is with Komachiyo, her loyal lion-dog companion, who frequently carries her into dangerous situations and fights alongside her. Tama also interacts with the Beast Pirates’ lower-ranking Gifters, though in a unique manner due to her abilities.
Development-wise, Tama begins as a starving child waiting for a savior and ends as a determined, proactive participant in her country’s liberation. She learns that her Kurozumi surname, which others initially view with suspicion or hatred, does not define her destiny. By the end of the arc, after Kaido and Orochi are defeated, she is seen smiling and eating freely, her core wish fulfilled. She does not undergo a dramatic personality shift but instead realizes her own capacity to act rather than wait.
Tama’s notable ability is tied to a Devil Fruit she ate called the Kibi Kibi no Mi, also known as the Rice Cake Fruit. This paramecia-type fruit allows her to produce small, sweet rice cakes from her cheeks. When a human or animal eats these rice cakes, Tama can then give them a simple command, such as “become my servant” or “sit down,” and the target must obey. The effect is temporary but powerful, and it works on animals as well as on any person who has eaten a SMILE fruit—the artificial zoan-type Devil Fruits given to the Beast Pirates’ Gifters. Because many of Kaido’s forces are SMILE users, Tama’s ability allows her to instantly convert large numbers of enemy soldiers to the alliance’s side, simply by feeding them her rice cakes. This turns her into a strategic linchpin during the Onigashima raid, as she rides Komachiyo across the battlefield and pacifies scores of Gifters, dramatically shifting the balance of power. Apart from this fruit’s power, Tama has no combat training or physical strength, but she shows great resilience and endurance for her age.
