Description
Bell-mère is a character from the fictional universe of the manga and anime series One Piece, appearing in the extended flashback sequence that details the childhood of the navigator Nami. Born in the Cocoyasi Village in the East Blue, she was known in her youth as a troublesome and调皮 child, which made her eventual departure to join the Marines a great surprise to her fellow villagers. She served as a Marine soldier, during which time she became a confident and reliable officer, once even declaring that she would personally stop the infamous escaped prisoner Shiki the Golden Lion if he threatened the East Blue.

Bell-mère’s life changed dramatically following a fierce battle in the war-torn Oykot Kingdom. Left alone and severely wounded, she was on the verge of death when she encountered two orphaned children: a three-year-old girl named Nojiko and a baby she would later name Nami. The baby’s innocent smile gave her the will to live. Ignoring her own injuries, she took both children back to her hometown of Cocoyasi Village. Despite the villagers suggesting that the children be placed in a government orphanage, Bell-mère was determined to raise them herself. She left the Marines and took up a simple life as a tangerine farmer, dedicating herself fully to being their mother.

Bell-mère’s personality is defined by a powerful combination of gruffness, fierce pride, and profound love. She is a rough-and-tumble individual who is not afraid to speak her mind or use physical force, such as slapping Nami for denying Nojiko as her sister or punching a boy who insulted her tangerines. Despite her tough exterior, her heart is exceptionally kind and her courage is absolute. She lives in poverty, often skipping meals herself and eating only tangerines so her daughters can have more food, all while pretending she is simply on a diet to maintain her skin. Her greatest motivation is the well-being and future of her two adopted daughters. She supports Nami’s dream of drawing a world map and works tirelessly, saving every small amount of money she can, hoping to provide them with a better life.

In the story, Bell-mère’s primary role is a tragic one, as her past directly shapes the core motivation of Nami. Her defining moment comes when the Arlong Pirates, a group of ruthless fish-men, invade Cocoyasi Village and impose a protection tax on all adults and children. When Arlong’s crew comes to her home, Bell-mère discovers she has just enough money to pay for only two people. She could have denied being the mother of Nami and Nojiko, as they were not on the official village registry, thus sparing her own life. However, her pride and identity as their mother made it impossible for her to utter the words "I have no family". She defiantly declared that the money was for her two daughters, thereby sacrificing her own life. Her last act was to embrace her crying daughters, apologize for not being able to give them more, and leave them with the words, "I love you," moments before being executed by Arlong.

Her key relationships are the central pillars of her character. Her bond with her two daughters is the most significant. Nami, the younger, shares her adoptive mother’s fiery temper and talent for drawing maps, while the more level-headed Nojiko often acts as the mature one in the family. Bell-mère also shares a close friendship with Genzo, the village policeman, who has known her since her youth. He is a trusted confidant who helps look after her and the girls, and she often teases him with flirtatious jokes that make him uncomfortable.

In terms of development, Bell-mère’s arc is a complete one told through memory. She transforms from a directionless troublemaker into a disciplined Marine, and finally into a selfless mother whose love is so absolute that she willingly embraces death to preserve her family’s dignity and safety. Her sacrifice becomes the emotional core of Nami’s long suffering under Arlong’s thumb, and her memory serves as a guiding light for Nami, who carries her mother’s will to survive and find happiness. Before her death, Bell-mère instilled in Nami the belief that as long as one survives, happy times will eventually come.

Bell-mère possessed notable abilities from her time as a Marine. She was a skilled combatant with practical experience fighting pirates, and she was proficient with firearms, specifically a rifle. Her reflexes were sharp enough to momentarily subdue the powerful fish-man Arlong by pinning him down and placing a gun in his mouth, even though he ultimately broke free. Her physical strength and stature were also considerable, as she stood 186 cm tall. She was also skilled in cooking and was particularly known for her tangerine preserves and sauces.
