Description
Jinbei, also known as the Knight of the Sea, is a whale shark fish-man and serves as the helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is the tenth member to join the crew, officially doing so during the Wano Country Arc after a long-standing agreement with the captain, Monkey D. Luffy. Jinbei is a former captain of the Sun Pirates and was once one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, a position he accepted to help protect his homeland of Fish-Man Island.

Jinbei is a large, imposing figure, standing over nine feet tall. He has a broad, stocky build, light blue skin, and a face resembling Japanese folklore demons like the oni. His features include a distinctive lightning-shaped scar over his left eye, thickly curled yellow eyebrows and sideburns, two large tusks jutting from his lower jaw, and a traditional topknot hairstyle. He typically wears patterned Japanese jinbei or kimono robes with wooden sandals, and he bears the Sun Pirates' sun emblem tattooed on his chest.

Personality-wise, Jinbei is a person of great honor, pride, and profound humility, which has earned him the nickname Knight of the Sea. He is known for his unwavering courage and composure, rarely losing his temper and maintaining a level head even in the face of overwhelming danger. Jinbei did not flinch when threatened by the emperor Big Mom's ability to steal the lifespans of those who show fear, claiming he had no reason to fear a mere emperor when he intended to serve the future Pirate King. Despite being a veteran pirate with decades of experience, he is exceptionally respectful, even toward his younger crewmates, and is humble about his own strength.

The guiding principle of Jinbei's life is the concept of humanity and chivalry. His primary motivation is to fulfill the dying wish of his former captain, Fisher Tiger, to achieve true coexistence and equality between fish-men and humans. He carries the dream of ending the centuries-old cycle of hatred and violence between the races. Jinbei lives a life of selflessness, having dedicated himself entirely to the protection of Fish-Man Island and his fellow fish-men. He is protective and paternal, often taking on too much responsibility, a trait that the king of Fish-Man Island, Neptune, has noted about him. His laughter is a boisterous "wahahaha," and he refers to himself as washi, a pronoun used by older men.

Jinbei's role in the story is that of a stalwart ally and a strategic powerhouse. Initially, he was imprisoned in the underwater fortress Impel Down for refusing to fight his friend, the emperor Whitebeard, to whom Fish-Man Island owed its safety. There, he met Luffy and helped him escape to participate in the Summit War of Marineford. After the war, he helped Luffy recover from the trauma of losing his brother. Following Luffy's liberation of Fish-Man Island from the usurper Hody Jones, Luffy formally invited Jinbei to join his crew. Jinbei postponed his answer to first honorably resign from Big Mom's crew, which had been protecting his island. This resignation was a dramatic affair where Jinbei fearlessly declared his departure and his loyalty to Luffy. He finally reunited with the crew during the raid on Onigashima, taking his place as the helmsman.

Key relationships define Jinbei's journey. His bond with Luffy is paramount, forged through shared trial and mutual respect. He also shared a profound friendship with Luffy's brother, Portgas D. Ace. The two were initially enemies who fought for five days straight, but they grew to respect each other so deeply that Ace asked Jinbei to look after Luffy. Jinbei views the emperor Whitebeard as a hero and savior for protecting Fish-Man Island. In contrast, he feels a heavy weight of responsibility for his former subordinate, Arlong, who terrorized the East Blue. Jinbei took full responsibility for Arlong's crimes and was prepared to accept any punishment from Arlong's victim, Nami, who ultimately forgave him.

Throughout the story, Jinbei develops from a figure who was once as hate-filled as Arlong, brutally attacking humans, into a wise leader who champions peace. Under Fisher Tiger's guidance, he abandoned a path of vengeance and later supported Queen Otohime's ideology of peaceful coexistence, even becoming a Warlord to aid her cause. He evolves from the captain of his own crew to a fiercely loyal subordinate under Luffy, fully embracing his role without any ambition for leadership.

Jinbei's notable abilities are vast. As a fish-man, he possesses tremendous natural strength, being ten times stronger than a human in water. He is an incredibly powerful and skilled master of Fish-Man Karate and Fish-Man Jujitsu, martial arts that allow him to manipulate water itself as a weapon, even in dry environments. He can fire high-speed pellets of water, create massive shockwaves with his punches, and manipulate ocean currents for devastating throws. He is also one of the few characters who can use both Armament and Observation Haki, enhancing his offense and defense. As the helmsman, his knowledge of ocean currents and his calm leadership are invaluable, allowing him to steer the Thousand Sunny through the most perilous seas. Furthermore, as a whale shark fish-man, he can breathe underwater, communicate with sharks, and summon them to his aid, making him an invincible fighter in the sea and the natural rescuer of his devil fruit-using crewmates.
