Description
Charlotte Linlin, more widely known by her epithet Big Mom, is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and the matriarch of the very large Charlotte Family. As one of the Four Emperors who rule the second half of the Grand Line known as the New World, she is a towering figure of immense power and influence, presiding over the archipelago of Totto Land as its queen.

Big Mom is a colossal woman, standing nearly nine meters tall, with a rotund physique, long pink curly hair, and a wide mouth with full lips. While in her later years she appears as an imposing and obese figure, flashbacks reveal that in her youth, particularly around the age of 28, she was a strikingly slender and beautiful woman. Her signature laugh is a resounding "Mama-mama-ma," and she refers to herself with the commanding pronoun "Ora," akin to "this old lady" or "I".

Her personality is a volatile and terrifying blend of childish caprice and ruthless tyranny. Big Mom is a despot who demands absolute obedience from her vast family and the citizens of her domain. She is intensely power-hungry, selfish, and cruel, with no qualms about killing even her own children or subordinates for failure, disobedience, or simply getting in the way of her hunger-driven rampages. Her mood can shift instantly from a terrifying queen to a seemingly more gentle figure when dealing with small children, though this is a notable exception to her otherwise merciless demeanor.

Perhaps her most defining personality trait is an extreme, pathological obsession with sweets. She is infamous for her episodes of "hunger pangs," a condition where a sudden craving for a specific dessert sends her into an uncontrollable, destructive frenzy. During these rampages, she destroys everything in her path, killing anyone who tries to stop her, until she finally consumes the object of her craving. This obsession extends to her governance; the many islands of Totto Land are themed after various foods, and each must pay a massive monthly tribute of candy. Failure to pay results in the annihilation of the island nation.

Big Mom's ultimate motivation is to create a utopia called Totto Land, a nation where every race from across the world can live together as a single, equal family, sitting around the same table to share meals. She envisions a world where her family and subjects are all enlarged to her size, a goal she pursues through the research of Caesar Clown into giantification. However, this dream is built on a foundation of fear, coercion, and tyranny, making her a hypocritical "unique dictator". She collects rare species and mythical creatures as part of this dream, keeping them imprisoned in books for her enjoyment.

Her backstory is rooted in tragedy and abandonment. As a child, Linlin possessed monstrous strength that she could not control, leading to her parents abandoning her on the island of Elbaf, the land of giants. There, she was taken in by Mother Carmel, who ran an orphanage for children from around the world. After Carmel vanished under mysterious circumstances, a young Linlin ate the orphanage's matron and in the process, gained her powers from the Soru Soru no Mi, or Soul-Soul Fruit. The trauma and loss surrounding the figure of Mother Carmel became a core psychological vulnerability; any damage to a treasured photo of her can trigger a complete mental breakdown, making her physically vulnerable.

Within the larger story, Big Mom serves as a central antagonist, first being named as an Emperor following the Summit War of Marineford. She becomes the primary antagonist of the Whole Cake Island Arc when the Straw Hat crew, led by Monkey D. Luffy and Sanji, infiltrate her territory. Her role expands into the Wano Country Arc, where she forms a temporary, uneasy alliance with another Emperor, Kaido of the Beasts, posing a combined apocalyptic threat to the world's balance.

Her relationships are defined by blood and utility. Big Mom has 85 biological children from 43 different husbands, whom she discards once they have served their purpose. While her children are the core of her crew and referred to as her "treasures," she treats them as disposable assets, forcing them into political marriages to forge alliances and showing no hesitation in taking their lifespans if they displease her. Her relationship with the giants of Elbaf is one of deep-seated hatred; they revile her as a "wicked god" or "evil spirit" for killing their elder, Jorul, during a childhood hunger pang, and this feud has prevented her from adding the giant race to Totto Land. Among her children, Charlotte Katakuri is her most powerful and respected son, though even he lives in fear of her wrath. Despite being allies in the Wano Arc, her relationship with Kaido is less about camaraderie and more a mutual respect of power, as they were once shipmates on the Rocks Pirates.

Big Mom's combat abilities are legendary. Her body is described as an "iron balloon," making her nearly impervious to damage. She possesses all three types of Haki at an extremely advanced level, including the rare Conqueror's Haki, which she can weaponize with her screams. Her primary power comes from the Soru Soru no Mi, which allows her to extract a person's soul and lifespan, provided that person feels even a shred of fear toward her. She uses the stolen souls to create Homies, which are sentient beings inhabiting objects or natural phenomena. Her three most powerful Homies are Napoleon, a tricorn hat that can transform into a massive blade; Prometheus, a miniature sun; and Zeus, a rain cloud. With these, she can command storms, fire, and devastating sword strikes like the "Heavenly Fire" or "Thunderbolt". Her raw physical strength, which was enough to defeat a giant elder at age five, combined with her Devil Fruit and Haki, makes her one of the most formidable physical forces in the world.
