Description
Chadros Higelyges, widely known by his epithet Brownbeard, is a former pirate captain from the Grand Line who becomes a significant figure during the events on the island of Punk Hazard. Standing an imposing 691 centimeters tall, he is an enormous, heavyset man with a long brown beard and mustache, typically styled into three distinct braids. His hair is similarly braided and emerges from beneath a tricorne hat. His attire often includes a large coat worn over an open shirt, leaving his chest bare, and a wrestling-style belt bearing his own pirate insignia. Following a devastating defeat, he loses his legs and is subsequently given the lower body of a crocodile, transforming him into a reptilian centaur that allows him to move with great speed and carry others with ease.
Brownbeard's personality undergoes a significant transformation throughout his appearances. He is initially presented as an arrogant and opportunistic pirate, proudly declaring himself lord over territories left vulnerable after the death of Edward Newgate, also known as Whitebeard. He is deeply concerned with his reputation and becomes upset or joyful depending on whether others recognize him, often boasting about his bounty of 80,060,000 berries. However, after suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Basil Hawkins, a member of the Worst Generation, Brownbeard is humbled. On Punk Hazard, he reveals a much more loyal and grateful nature. He genuinely cares for the safety of his crew members and develops a deep, almost worshipful loyalty towards Caesar Clown, believing the scientist saved his life. While he grows to hate the pirates of the Worst Generation for his defeat, he makes exceptions for those he perceives as benefactors, such as Trafalgar Law and eventually Monkey D. Luffy. He possesses a unique and loud laugh, expressed as Wohoho.
Brownbeard's role in the story begins after the summit war of Marineford. Seeking to capitalize on the power vacuum, he seizes control of Foodvalten Island, a territory once protected by Whitebeard. This act of hubris leads to his encounter with the Hawkins Pirates, who effortlessly annihilate his crew and leave him without the use of his legs. He drifts to the island of Punk Hazard, a place of deadly chemical weapons and forbidden research. There, he and his surviving crew are taken in by Caesar Clown, a mad scientist, who uses Trafalgar Law's abilities to graft crocodile lower bodies onto them. Out of profound gratitude, Brownbeard becomes the loyal boss of Caesar's Centaur Patrol Unit, believing Caesar to be a kind-hearted genius purifying the island. When the Straw Hat Pirates arrive on Punk Hazard, Brownbeard confronts them but is quickly defeated and forced to serve as their mount. Initially an antagonist, his loyalties shift dramatically when he discovers Caesar's true nature. After hearing a recording of Caesar ordering his elimination and learning that the scientist was responsible for poisoning the island and enslaving children, Brownbeard is filled with fury and betrayal. He turns against his former master, helping the Straw Hats and their allies escape Caesar's deadly gas weapon, Shinokuni, despite sustaining severe injuries.
Key relationships define Brownbeard's motivations and actions. His relationship with Caesar Clown is central, evolving from fanatical devotion to bitter hatred upon learning the truth. He feels a strong sense of camaraderie and responsibility toward his own crew, demanding their return from Caesar after the betrayal. Despite hating the Worst Generation, he respects Trafalgar Law for giving him new legs and initially fears Monkey D. Luffy before developing a mutual respect for him, eventually calling Luffy a friend. His past encounters include a failed attempt to invade Whitebeard's territory, where he was easily defeated by Portgas D. Ace and Marco.
In terms of abilities, Brownbeard does not possess any Devil Fruit powers. As a former New World captain, he has considerable strength and durability, surviving point-blank gunfire, powerful explosions, and being injected with muscle relaxants while still managing to fight back. He also displays a degree of tactical intelligence in battle, deducing how to counter Devil Fruit users by capsizing their boat. After receiving his new crocodile lower body, his primary function becomes high-speed transport, easily carrying multiple people across the island. His development arc concludes with him choosing to surrender to the Marines, reasoning that imprisonment is preferable to being Caesar's experimental subject, and he later seeks to rescue any of his crew who might still be alive.
