Description
Mozu is a minor character from the anime and manga series One Piece, introduced as a member of the Franky Family in the city of Water 7. Alongside her partner Kiwi, she is known as one of the Square Sisters, a nickname derived from her distinctive square-shaped hairstyle. Mozu is a young woman with black hair cut in a straight, angular style, brown eyes, and typically wears a yellow bikini top, yellow slacks, and goggles pulled up over her hair. Her companion Kiwi has a similar but curly-edged hairstyle and wears red.
Mozu's primary motivation is her deep loyalty to Franky, the leader of the Franky Family and later a member of the Straw Hat Pirates. She and Kiwi follow Franky everywhere, often mimicking his poses and reactions in an exaggerated, affectionate manner. This behavior serves as both comic relief and a visible sign of their devotion. They frequently end their sentences with the nonsense word "Waina," a speech quirk they have had since childhood. Despite their playful demeanor, they are serious about supporting Franky and his goals.
In the story, Mozu appears mainly during the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. She is part of the group that assists Franky in his conflict with the World Government and later aids the Straw Hat Pirates during the raid on Enies Lobby to rescue Nico Robin. Initially perceived as lighthearted sidekicks, Mozu and Kiwi prove to be more capable than expected during the Enies Lobby battle, where they actively fight alongside Franky and the others, using samurai swords to engage enemy Marines. Their combat abilities are modest; Franky and the CP9 agent Kalifa easily subdue them earlier in the arc, indicating they are not among the series' more powerful fighters. Nevertheless, their willingness to participate in such a dangerous mission reflects their growth from simple comic relief to reliable allies.
Mozu's key relationships center on Kiwi, with whom she is almost always paired, and Franky, whom she treats as a big brother figure. She also interacts with other members of the Franky Family and the Straw Hat Pirates during the Enies Lobby assault. Her development is subtle but noticeable: she transitions from a background character who merely echoes Franky's bravado to a participant who actively contributes to the group's efforts. A flashback reveals that as a child, Mozu and Kiwi were inspired by the Sea Train test drive to dream of becoming shipwrights, and they later attempted the Galley-La Company entrance exam but failed. This backstory adds a layer of personal aspiration to their otherwise comedic role.
Notable abilities include proficiency with samurai swords in combat, though their fighting style is not highly refined. Their most distinctive trait is their square hairstyle, which in strong winds forces them to walk sideways to avoid being blown backward. This quirk highlights the series' whimsical approach to character design. Beyond these details, Mozu does not possess any Devil Fruit powers or other supernatural skills. Her value in the narrative lies in her loyalty, her comic interactions with Franky and Kiwi, and her quiet evolution from a gag character to a competent supporting fighter during a pivotal story arc.
