Description
Pappag is an orange starfish who serves as both the pet and the teacher of the mermaid Camie. He is the founder, president, and chief designer of the Criminal brand, a popular clothing label based on Fish-Man Island, and he is mentoring Camie so that she can become a fashion designer. In appearance, he is an orange starfish with stitching along his outline, a face set in the middle of his body, and a patterned hat resembling a tam or rasta cap. After the two-year timeskip, he wears sunglasses bearing the Criminal logo and a small bow tie. He lives in a mansion in Gyonare Hills, a prime area of Fish-Man Island, with the brand's flagship store on the ground floor, and his birthday is September 21.
As a child, Pappag believed he was human, and through sheer force of will he began speaking the human language; by the time he realized he was actually a starfish, he had already learned to talk. This unusual origin explains why he is able to speak fluently and even sing, abilities that starfish normally lack. About eight years before the main events of the story, he and Camie were among those supporting Queen Otohime's petition campaign. He first appeared during a cover story involving Hatchan, when a sea boar spat him and Camie out; after a series of events involving the Macro Fish-Man Pirates, Hatchan rescued Camie, and the three became traveling companions who later set up a takoyaki stand together.
Pappag is confident, proud, and impulsive, and he tends to act on momentum. He insists that he is Camie's owner even though the relationship is reversed, with Camie actually being the one who cares for him. He is easily hurt when ignored and can become briefly depressed, a recurring trait in his appearances. Despite his bluster, he is deeply sentimental and loyal, crying at length when Camie is taken and trying to protect her despite having no combat ability. He is also mindful of social formalities, and he is shown to be appalled by the Straw Hat crew's casual way of addressing King Neptune. He once falsely claimed to be friends with Princess Shirahoshi.
His primary motivations are the success of his Criminal fashion line, the well-being of Camie, and loyalty to his friends, especially Hatchan. He takes pride in his work and in his reputation. Pappag first appears in the lead-up to the Sabaody Archipelago storyline, when he and Camie are spat out of a sea king after Monkey D. Luffy attacks the creature, bringing them onto the Thousand Sunny. He scolds Camie for trying to sell takoyaki to the crew instead of offering it freely in thanks. He, Camie, and Hatchan guide the Straw Hats to Sabaody, explain the need for a ship coating, and help them search for the coating mechanic Rayleigh. When Camie is kidnapped and nearly sold at a human auction, Pappag desperately tries to retrieve her, and the incident involving the World Nobles becomes a major turning point in the voyage. Two years later, when the Straw Hats arrive at Fish-Man Island, Pappag welcomes them, hosts them, and helps rescue Zoro and the others who had been captured in Ryugu Kingdom.
