Description
Charlotte Lola is the captain of the Rolling Pirates and the 23rd daughter and 53rd child of the Charlotte Family, making her the daughter of the former Emperor Charlotte Linlin, known as Big Mom. Her father is Linlin's 25th husband, Pound. She has an older twin sister named Charlotte Chiffon. Before becoming a pirate captain, Lola served as the Minister of Chocolate on Cacao Island in her mother's territory of Totto Land. She fled her family and abandoned her position after refusing an arranged political marriage to Loki, the prince of the Giants of Elbaf, a decision driven by her desire for freedom in love. Her mother bore a deep grudge against her for this defiance. During her journey, Lola and her crew encountered Gecko Moria and had their shadows stolen, leaving them stranded on the island of Thriller Bark. Lola's shadow was placed into a zombie warthog, giving her a monstrous appearance while on the island.
Personality-wise, Lola is energetic, compassionate, and has a strong romantic streak. She is famously known as Marriage Proposal Lola because of her habit of repeatedly asking nearly every man she meets to marry her; she had been rejected 4,444 times by the time she met Luffy. Despite her impulsive and sometimes dramatic nature, she is genuinely kind-hearted and deeply values friendship and loyalty. Her primary motivation is to find true love on her own terms, free from familial or political pressure, a goal that directly led her to defy her mother's wishes and leave Totto Land.
Lola's role in the main story begins during the Thriller Bark arc, where she initially appears as a warthog zombie. In this form, she befriends Nami in the graveyard, offering kindness and help despite being an enemy soldier. Recognizing Nami's fear, Lola gives her a portion of a Vivre Card connected to her mother, Big Mom, as a means of safety. This seemingly small gift proves pivotal later in the series when the Straw Hat Pirates navigate through Big Mom's territory and Whole Cake Island, providing them with a valuable navigational tool and a connection to the powerful emperor. Lola's true identity as a Charlotte is gradually revealed, leading to her reunion with her family. Her relationship with Nami remains one of close friendship; Nami recognizes the real Lola immediately after her shadow is restored, and the two share a warm bond, with Nami even giving Lola some of her treasure. Lola has a particularly close relationship with her twin sister Chiffon, and the sisters eventually reunite in Dressrosa. She also shares a fond relationship with her younger half-sister Pudding, who admires Lola's courage in choosing her own path. Lola's connection to her father Pound is initially nonexistent—she never met him as a child—but they are reunited in Dressrosa, where Pound witnesses her wedding.
In terms of development, Lola's character shifts from a shadowless victim hiding on Thriller Bark to a free and determined woman who reclaims her life. The culmination of her pursuit of love comes when she meets Gotti, an assassin from the Fire Tank Pirates led by Capone Bege. After Gotti mistakes her for her twin sister Chiffon and rescues her from the Marines, Lola proposes to him, and he accepts. They are married on the ship of the Fire Tank Pirates, with her father in attendance, fulfilling her dream of marrying for love. This marriage also symbolically resolves the rift left by her earlier escape from Elbaf, as she has now found a partner of her own choosing.
Regarding abilities, Lola does not possess known Devil Fruit powers or advanced combat skills. Her main strengths lie in her emotional intelligence, resilience, and ability to form genuine connections with others, which often prove far more valuable in her journey than physical might. She is also noted to have culinary skills, having served as the Minister of Chocolate and being considered superior in that role by her younger sister Pudding. As a former zombie warthog, she had temporary enhanced strength and durability, but those attributes were lost once her shadow was restored. Her most significant notable ability is her possession of a Vivre Card from her mother Big Mom, which she shared with Nami, demonstrating her trust and protective nature.
