Description
Camie is a young kissing gourami mermaid who first appears as a resident of the Ryugu Kingdom on Fish-Man Island, though she is introduced during the Straw Hat Pirates' journey to the Sabaody Archipelago. She is characterized by her light green hair, prominent lips, and a long pink tail with lighter fins, which distinguishes her as a mermaid whose tail has not yet split into legs, indicating she is under thirty years old. Her design often features a yellow and pink shirt that exposes her stomach and an orange, clam-shaped backpack used to carry takoyaki. After the two-year timeskip, her appearance matures slightly with a longer, slimmer tail and a more feminine outfit from Pappag’s Criminal brand.

Camie has a very distinct and endearing personality, largely defined by her naivety and constant state of surprise. She is famously gullible and has the unfortunate habit of getting into trouble, having been swallowed by sea kings at least twenty times and captured by slavers nearly thirty times before meeting the Straw Hats. When shocked, which happens frequently, she displays a comical and exaggerated face-fault where her eyes pop out and her tongue sticks out in a zigzag pattern. Despite her lack of street smarts, Camie is exceptionally kind-hearted, caring, and open. She does not harbor prejudice against humans, a rarity for someone from her background, and trusts others very easily, as shown when she immediately asked the Straw Hats for help despite just meeting them. She has a unique verbal tic of adding the suffix chin to the names of people she is close to, such as calling Luffy Luffy-chin and Hatchan Hatchin. She also tends to refer to humans as human people redundantly. After the two-year timeskip, while still retaining her core quirks, she appears more mature, thoughtful, and independent, living apart from her former guardians.

Within the story, Camie serves as a crucial catalyst for the Sabaody Archipelago Arc and an ally to the Straw Hats. She is first rescued by Monkey D. Luffy after being swallowed by a sea king and repays the crew by guiding them toward Fish-Man Island. She is a central figure due to her connection to Hatchan, the former enemy turned friend, and her status as a mermaid makes her a target for the World Nobles. When she is captured and put up for sale at the Human Auction House, her impending sale triggers the direct conflict between the Straw Hats and a Celestial Dragon, leading to the events that force the crew to separate for two years. On Fish-Man Island, she acts as a guide for Luffy and his crew, helping them navigate the island and find their way to the Sea Forest to meet Jinbe.

Her key relationships are deeply tied to her journey. She is almost always accompanied by Pappag, a starfish who is simultaneously her pet and her master. While she keeps him fed, she also studies under him to become a fashion designer. Her dynamic with Pappag often involves her accidentally ignoring or interrupting him, leading to comedic moments of depression for the starfish. Her strongest bond is with Hatchan, who rescued her and Pappag from a sea boar. Despite Hatchan initially trading her for a treasure map, he returned to save her, and she has since stuck by him, helping him run his takoyaki stand, Takoyaki 8. There are hints that she may have romantic feelings for Hatchan, as she blushes when asked if they are a couple. She also forms a strong, trusting bond with the Straw Hat Pirates, particularly Nami and Luffy, and she is grateful to them for risking everything to save her from slavery.

As a mermaid, Camie possesses several notable abilities. She is an incredibly fast swimmer, capable of moving faster than the flying fish used by the Flying Fish Riders, and she can breathe underwater naturally. She also has the unique ability to communicate with fish and other marine life, using sonar waves to call out to them and ask for directions or assistance, a skill she frequently uses to help the Straw Hats navigate. However, like all fish-men and mermaids, she is generally more vulnerable while on land or aboard a ship. Her primary motivation is to become a famous fashion designer like her mentor, Pappag, and she works various jobs, such as at the Mermaid Cafe, to support this dream.
