Description
Duval, also known by his epithet "Iron Mask Duval," is the leader of the Rosy Life Riders, a gang of outlaws based around the Sabaody Archipelago and Fish-Man Island. Before forming this group, he was a small-time mafia figure on an island in the Grand Line. His life took a dramatic and unfortunate turn due to the publication of Sanji's first bounty poster, which featured a crude hand-drawn illustration. Duval's real face bore an uncanny and almost identical resemblance to this drawing, with the only minor difference being the direction of the curl in his eyebrow. This resemblance made him a target for countless bounty hunters and Marines who mistook him for the wanted pirate. Forced to flee his home and hide his face to survive, he donned a large iron mask to conceal his identity, earning him his nickname. The emotional and physical scars from this persecution, including a significant wound on his back, fueled a deep and obsessive hatred for Sanji, whom he held responsible for ruining his life.

In his initial appearance, Duval is a large and physically imposing man, standing around twice the height of an average person, with a muscular torso and a fur-lined leather coat. His personality at this stage is defined by his bitter resentment. He is quick to anger, particularly at any mention of Sanji, which causes him to slip into a heavy rural accent. This grudge is so consuming that he not only blames Sanji for his misfortune but also seems unable to conceive of simpler solutions, such as altering his own appearance to escape the mistaken identity. He leads a kidnapping gang known as the Flying Fish Riders, a profession he never truly desired but adopted as a means to survive and gain power to exact his revenge. To lure the Straw Hat Pirates to his base, he orchestrates the capture of Hatchan, a friend of the crew.

When the Straw Hats arrive, the ensuing battle leads to a direct confrontation with Sanji. During the fight, Duval's iron mask is broken, revealing his face to the shocked crew. Despite his efforts, he is ultimately no match for Sanji, who defeats him with a powerful kick. However, this attack has an unexpected side effect: it violently rearranges Duval's facial bone structure, leaving him with a dramatically handsome new appearance. Upon seeing his transformed face, Duval's entire personality undergoes an instant and profound change. All his past hatred and grudges are completely washed away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of gratitude and extreme vanity. He becomes a devoted and loyal ally to the Straw Hats, whom he now considers his benefactors. He renames his gang the Rosy Life Riders and abandons the kidnapping trade.

In this new role, Duval is defined by his unwavering loyalty and narcissism. He frequently admires his own reflection and insists on being called "Handsome," referring to himself as such in conversation. While his men are deeply loyal to him, sharing in his past suffering and present joy, his most significant relationship is with Sanji. He addresses Sanji as "Young Master" and sees himself as eternally indebted to the cook. In return, Sanji is often annoyed by Duval's self-absorbed antics but acknowledges his usefulness and loyalty. As a key part of his newfound purpose, Duval plays a critical role in protecting the Straw Hats' ship, the Thousand Sunny. While the crew was separated for two years, Duval and his gang, alongside Hatchan, valiantly defended the vessel from numerous attacks by pirates and Marines, sustaining severe injuries in the process.

In terms of abilities, Duval is a formidable fighter with immense physical strength, capable of crushing bundles of metal harpoons with a single hand. His combat skill allowed him to survive being hunted by powerful forces for a long period. His primary weapons are harpoon guns, which fire harpoons coated in a potent scorpion venom said to kill a victim within minutes. He is also a skilled commander, leading his gang in coordinated attacks while riding giant flying fish that can travel both through the air and underwater. While his men ride these fish, Duval himself rides a large, loyal bison named Motobaro, who is equipped with a breathing apparatus for underwater travel. Despite his strength and toughness, he is not on the same level as the elite fighters of the Straw Hat crew, as he was defeated by Sanji with relative ease. His true value comes not from his combat prowess but from his incredible devotion and unwavering commitment to protecting the Straw Hats and their property, making him an unexpectedly crucial ally.
