Description
Ellis, also known by her full name Ellisel Vulgrum, is a secondary character created for the fantasy series Slayers. She is a young woman who appears to be approximately twenty-five years old, with short black hair and large, honey-colored eyes. Her physique is described as well-proportioned, and her attire often reflects a darker aesthetic, including black clothing and, in some depictions, a short skirt and spiked shoulder pads under a long black cape.
Regarding her background, Ellis is established as one of the three top disciples of Rezo the Red Priest, alongside Zelgadiss and a man known as Noonsa, and she is the only woman among them. Her speciality lies in magic related to the creation of clones, copies, and chimeras, as well as the control of these creations. This complex task is something she performs with great ease, which earns her recognition as a gifted student of Rezo. Ellis traveled with Rezo for a time and witnessed the good deeds that contributed to his famous reputation.
In terms of personality, Ellis is defined by her deep admiration for her master, Rezo. This admiration grows into a profound and romantic love for him, even though it is never reciprocated. She is aware of Rezo's deepest desire to cure his blindness and is dedicated to helping him in any way she can. After learning of Rezo's death, which she believes was caused by Lina Inverse and Zelgadiss, her motivations shift entirely toward revenge. Consumed by this desire, she devises a plan to avenge her beloved master.
Ellis's role in the story is that of an antagonist. In the anime continuity, she creates a Copy of Rezo from strands of his hair to serve as an emotional refuge. This Copy is nearly identical to the original but possesses the ability to see. To achieve her revenge, Ellis hires mercenaries and lures Lina Inverse and her companions to the city of Sairag, where Rezo's old laboratory is located. In the novels, her role is similar but with key differences; she seeks revenge by sending wave after wave of clones and chimeras after Lina Inverse, even going so far as to infiltrate the group herself under a false identity.
Key relationships are central to her character. Her most significant relationship is with Rezo, who is her master and the object of her unrequited love. In the anime, she also has a complex relationship with the Copy of Rezo she creates, which she intends to control with a gem embedded in its mind. However, this Copy develops its own will, leading to a pivotal and tragic end for Ellis. In the novels, her relationship with the existing Copy of Rezo also ends in betrayal. She has little interaction with her fellow disciples in the anime, but in the novels, she does not know Zelgadiss personally, though she still blames him for Rezo's death.
Ellis's development follows a tragic arc from a dedicated and loving disciple to a vengeful sorceress. Her plan to use a Copy of Rezo to achieve her goals ultimately backfires fatally. In both the anime and novel continuities, the Copy of Rezo ultimately murders Ellis in cold blood, refusing to be used as a mere tool or reminder of the original. Her death is abrupt and devoid of ceremony.
Her notable abilities are specialized in clonal sorcery. She is highly skilled in the creation of clones and chimeras, a challenging field of magic that she handles with remarkable proficiency. Furthermore, her talent extends to the remote manipulation and control of these creatures, allowing her to command them from a distance using a hidden gem.
