Description
Ghim is a dwarf warrior and one of the core members of the adventuring party in the original Record of Lodoss War anime. Recognizable for his stout build, rugged appearance, and the large double-headed axe he carries into battle, Ghim is a seasoned fighter whose personal quest gives him a solemn and determined presence within the group.

His background is rooted in a deep sense of personal debt and devotion. Originally a miner from the Iron Kingdom, he was severely injured in a cave-in and taken to the Temple of Marfa in the town of Tarba to be healed. There, he was nursed back to health by a young priestess named Leylia, the daughter of the High Priestess Neese. During his recovery, a strong friendship formed between Ghim and Leylia. However, roughly a year later, Leylia mysteriously vanished from the temple. While Neese waited for word of her daughter for seven years, Ghim could no longer remain idle. Driven by a promise to bring Leylia back to her mother, he left his home to search for her, a quest that defines most of his actions throughout the story.

In terms of personality, Ghim is presented as a classic dwarf: stubborn, taciturn, and gruff on the surface, but deeply loyal and caring underneath. He is an experienced and wise adventurer, often possessing knowledge of the lands they travel through, which proves valuable to the group. Despite his tough exterior, he is driven by a powerful sense of responsibility and guilt over Leylia's disappearance, believing he must be the one to rescue her. This singular focus sometimes makes him appear withdrawn or melancholic, as his personal mission weighs heavily on him.

Ghim's role in the story is that of the party's stalwart warrior and a key figure in the narrative's emotional core. He initially seeks out the mage Slayn, an old friend, for help in his search, which is how he becomes entangled with the main group including the young swordsman Parn and the cleric Etoh. As the larger conflict against the dark island of Marmo unfolds, Ghim discovers that Leylia has been possessed by the ancient and powerful Grey Witch, Karla, who is using her body as a vessel. This revelation transforms his quest from a simple rescue mission into a desperate struggle against a formidable magical foe.

His key relationships are central to his development. His friendship with Slayn is one of his most important bonds; Slayn often provides the calm reassurance and magical support that Ghim needs to continue his journey. He also shares a mentor-like dynamic with the younger Parn, often helping him with training and offering the support of a more experienced fighter. In contrast, his relationship with the high elf Deedlit is one of classic fantasy animosity, as dwarves and elves have an inherent and deep-seated mutual dislike for one another, leading to frequent bickering between them.

Ghim's character development culminates in his final act of self-sacrifice. Realizing that the only way to free Leylia from Karla's control is to destroy the magical circlet the witch wears, the party confronts her in the fallen palace of Kastuul. In the heat of the battle, Ghim endures a direct attack from Karla to hurl his axe at the circlet. His aim is true, and the axe shatters the circlet, freeing Leylia from possession. However, the witch's final spell proves fatal, and Ghim dies from his wounds. His last act is a quiet, personal one: he leaves Leylia a wooden comb he had carved for her, a simple token of his deep affection and care. He perishes without seeing her freed, making his sacrifice both heroic and deeply tragic.

In combat, Ghim is a formidable front-line fighter. His primary weapon is a large double-headed axe, which he wields with great strength and bravery. He is known for his incredible endurance and resilience, able to withstand powerful magical attacks that would fell other warriors, a trait that allows him to make the final, desperate throw to save Leylia. After his death, Ghim's body was taken from the swamp and laid to rest, with only his axe left to mark his grave, a solemn monument to his loyalty and sacrifice.
