Description
Etoh is a central character from the anime Record of Lodoss War, known as a devoted priest and a loyal friend. He was born and raised in the village of Zaxon, the son of a merchant, and became fast friends with his similarly orphaned neighbor, Parn, during their childhood. While Parn dreamed of becoming a knight, a different path called to Etoh. At the age of fifteen, he left his hometown to join the clergy of Falis, the God of Light, much like his friend Slayn did to study magic. It was somewhat unusual for someone from Alania, a kingdom where the earth goddess Marfa was more commonly worshipped, to become a priest of Falis, but Etoh demonstrated a natural aptitude for it.
After four years of training at the temple in the holy city of Roid, the capital of Valis, Etoh returned to Zaxon as a novice priest. He immediately reunited with Parn and joined him in defending their village from a band of goblins, an event that launched the pair on their first true adventure. Etoh’s personality is friendly, gentle, and helpful, and he is deeply devoted to his religious duties. He often provides a calming and wise counterpoint to Parn’s hot-headed and impulsive nature. Despite his generally peaceful demeanor and a somewhat unathletic build, he is far from a coward and has proven himself to be a capable combatant, effectively wielding a combat staff to defend himself when necessary.
In the party of adventurers, Etoh takes on the vital role of a healer and supporter. As a priest of Falis, his primary abilities include divine magic, which he uses to heal wounds and provide blessings. His spiritual devotion and learning also allow him to speak ancient tongues, a skill of authenticity and communication. His motivations are rooted in his friendship with Parn and his sense of duty. He is driven to help his friend succeed and to follow the tenets of his faith, which includes aiding the innocent and combating evil.
His most significant relationship is with his childhood friend Parn, to whom he remains a steadfast companion. Throughout their journey, Etoh’s role evolves from a simple supporter to a key figure in the kingdom of Valis. While helping to rescue the kidnapped Princess Fianna from the witch Karla, Fianna developed feelings for the young priest. After the tragic death of her father, King Fahn, Etoh remained in Roid to support the grieving princess, and their bond deepened into love. Ultimately, Etoh’s path diverges from Parn's as he stays behind to marry Fianna. In a break from tradition, where the monarch of Valis was typically chosen from the knighthood, Etoh was crowned the Holy King of Valis, supported by the powerful Falis priesthood which recognized his exceptional devotion. He did not, however, spend his entire life on the throne. In later years, he abdicated his kingship to become the High Priest of Falis, fully embracing the life of spiritual service that had first called him away from Zaxon.
