Description
Gim is a dwarf warrior and a central figure in the original Record of Lodoss War anime. His background is rooted in a life of labor, as he was originally a miner in the Iron Kingdom. This career came to an abrupt end when he was seriously injured in a cave-in. He was taken to the Temple of Marfa in the town of Tarba to be healed, and it was there that he met Leylia, the daughter of the High Priestess Neese, who nursed him back to health. During his recovery, he and Leylia became very close friends.
Approximately a year after this event, Leylia mysteriously vanished from the temple. For seven years, her mother waited for word of her, but Ghim grew tired of inaction. Driven by a deep sense of gratitude and personal obligation, he left his home and began a journey to find Leylia, making a promise to Neese that he would bring her daughter back. His personality is characterized by a gruff, stubborn, and taciturn exterior, which is typical of the dwarves of Lodoss. Beneath this rough shell, however, lies a profoundly loyal and determined individual. His quest to find Leylia is the singular, driving motivation that defines his actions throughout the story, and he is deeply grateful to Neese for saving his life.
Gim's role in the story is initially that of a seeker. He travels to the village of Zaxon to ask for help from his longtime friend, Slayn the Sage of the North. After their village is attacked, the two of them join forces with the young and inexperienced aspiring knight Parn and his friend Etoh. Within this group, Gim serves as a mentor to Parn, teaching him how to fight and acting as a seasoned, if grumpy, guide. He is a steadfast and irreplaceable ally, even though he harbors a classic dwarven distrust for elves, which puts him in frequent conflict with the high elf Deedlit, as the two simply cannot get along due to an irreconcilable temperament between their races.
Over the course of their journey, Gim discovers that Leylia has been kidnapped by the ancient and powerful sorceress Karla, the Grey Witch, who is using Leylia's body as her own vessel. This revelation steels his resolve. After the War of Heroes concludes, Gim and his companions travel to the silent swamp and enter the fallen palace of Kastuul to confront Karla. In the final battle, Gim endures one of the witch's magical attacks to throw his double-headed axe. His axe flies true, striking the circlet on Leylia's head and shattering it, thus freeing her from Karla's control forever. This heroic act is his final and redeeming moment, as Karla's last spell kills him before he can see Leylia freed. With his dying act, he gives Leylia a wooden comb he had carved for her as a gift. His companions later take his body from the swamp and bury it, marking his grave only with his trusted axe.
