Description
Benares is an immortal servant, known as a Wu, of the demon god Kaiyanwang, who is also referred to as the Demon-Eyed King or Shiva. Before becoming a Wu, Benares was a tremendously powerful dragon monster. By consuming various holy demons, he absorbed enough intelligence to eventually transform into the humanoid form he typically assumes. He is male and is over four thousand years old, originating from the Sacred Land, the world of the Sanjiyan immortals.

Benares assumed command of Kaiyanwang's demons after his master was sealed away by the Sanjiyan known as Parvati. For the next three hundred years, his primary motivation was to find a way to revive Kaiyanwang from his prison. He is a highly powerful figure in the demon world, wielding immense physical, magical, and political influence that instills fear in almost everyone. His personality is generally cautious and strict, and he possesses absolute loyalty to his master. However, he is also a battle-crazed warrior who takes genuine pleasure in combat. Despite his ferocity, he is not a simple brute; he is often depicted as a strategist who sets up intricate traps to torment his enemies. He is highly prideful, despises fleeing from battle, and is extremely strict with his subordinates, punishing those who make significant mistakes. Yet, he also shows a sense of compassion, mourning fallen allies and ensuring the injured receive treatment, which earns him both fear and respect from those under his command.

In the story, Benares serves as a primary antagonist. After his master's sealing, he becomes the de facto leader of Kaiyanwang's forces. He charges his subordinates with finding and destroying the keys and entrances to the Sacred Land and explicitly orders them not to try to kill Pai, the last Sanjiyan who is also the protagonist. In one of his schemes, he uses a parasitic technique called Choang-Rin-Rin on Pai, which reincarnates a beast named Houasyou into a human form that lives its own life for a time. He also possesses the rotting carcass of Pai's familiar, Takumi, to gain mind-control over an ally. He ultimately disobeys his master's orders by attempting to kill Pai himself, which leads to his own destruction at her hands. In the later stages of the conflict, after Kaiyanwang is fully restored, Benares regains his full powers and becomes a more straightforward, violence-focused enemy, even growing to a giant size in his true form.

Benares has several key relationships. His most defining relationship is with his master, Kaiyanwang, to whom he is utterly devoted. He is also an enemy of Pai and her Wu, Yakumo Fujii, viewing them as obstacles to his master's revival. He has a subordinate relationship with characters like Choukai, whom he charged with specific missions. He is also the creator of Beast Magic, a unique form of magic exclusive to the Wu, and is said to be capable of controlling a hundred Beast Demons. Throughout the narrative, Benares develops from a calculating and patient strategist focused on freeing his master into a more openly aggressive combatant who directly confronts the heroes once his goal is achieved.

Benares possesses a vast array of notable abilities. He is a great sorcerer with a life force far greater than ordinary demons and is the creator of Beast Magic, a technique that allows him to summon and control various demonic creatures. Some of his powerful Beast Magic attacks include Koanya, a light-element attack in the form of a three-eyed dragon with immense destructive power, and Inya, a creature that can swallow Koanya's attack. He also has capture-type spells like Fuyaochichi, a giant spider that seals targets in a cocoon, and defensive abilities such as Sten-Shifon-Chinfonfan, a tetrahedral shield formed by four small creatures that provides ultimate protection. He can also use a technique called Fūyaochen, which opens a hole into a subspace to banish targets to a void without water, air, or light, a power he used to banish many Wu and Sanjiyan in the past. Another technique, Choanrinrin, transforms a living being into a diamond-shaped parasite to possess another creature, overriding its personality. In his original form as an evil dragon god, he can emit an overwhelming energy wave called Ryuseiha, which erodes the minds of all living beings nearby and was once powerful enough to nearly destroy the Sacred Land.
