Description
Mill Varna is the princess of the Varna royal family and the first heir to the throne of the Bartonian Empire, one of the dominant nations of the fantasy world where the story takes place. She appears as a teenage girl with brown hair cut to neck length and brown eyes. Her status as heir places her at the heart of the central conflict: when the Jaina holy group overruns her family's territory and kills her family, Mill becomes a hunted fugitive whose survival depends on escaping their pursuit. She first crosses paths with Maze when Maze's dwelling crashes down from the sky and crushes Mill's pursuers, and Mill immediately hails Maze as the one who saved her life, attaching herself to Maze without hesitation.
In personality, Mill is outgoing, energetic, and noticeably childish for a royal. She displays strong signs of abandonment issues, clinging to Maze with an intensity that goes beyond simple gratitude. Her affection toward Maze is all-consuming and frequently expressed in outlandish, openly stated plans: she declares her intention to marry the female Maze and to have Maze's children with the male Maze, treating the two forms of the same individual as separate objects of her devotion. She refers to the female Maze with the affectionate address of an older sister figure, and her obsessive attachment comes across as both comic behavior and genuine emotional vulnerability. Beneath the immaturity, her feelings and her loyalty to Maze are sincere.
Mill's motivation is rooted in loss. Having lost her family and her homeland to the Jaina holy group, she is driven by the desire to defeat Jaina and reclaim the Bartonian throne as the last heir of her house. This makes her more than a rescued refugee in the story; she is the political center of the party's mission. While Maze serves as the main combatant and pilot, Mill is the figure around whom the campaign to restore Bartonia is organized, and the war against Jaina is fought in large part to place her back on the throne. She is a main character throughout the television series and the series' other animated entries, and her journey from fleeing refugee to rallying figure shapes the direction of the plot.
Her most notable ability is the power to summon Dulgar, the family heirloom Demi-Armor and one of the greatest war machines of its kind in the fantasy world. Despite her ability to call it forth, only Maze is able to pilot Dulgar, so in practice Mill serves as the summoner while Maze operates the machine in battle. Her importance therefore rests on both her royal lineage and her unique connection to this legendary armor.
Mill's key relationships center on Maze. Her bond with Maze is the most significant relationship in her life, born from being rescued at her lowest moment and sustained through the long war. Her devotion encompasses both the female and male versions of Maze, and her fear of being left behind feeds her obsessive behavior. Around her, the wider traveling group gathers, including the knight Rapier of the neighboring kingdom ruled by Mill's uncle, the Demi-Armor hunters Aster and Solude, and the fairy guide Randy, all of whom join the fight to oppose Jaina and support Mill's claim to the throne.
Over the course of the story, Mill develops from a vulnerable and dependent princess into a more determined leader. Her childish obsessions gradually channel into a more focused sense of purpose, and her bond with Maze remains the foundation that drives her actions, giving her the resolve to defeat Jaina and regain Bartonia's independence. In the original manga version of the franchise, Mill is additionally depicted as possessing both male and female physical characteristics, a detail sometimes noted in descriptions of the character across the series' adaptations.
