Description
The character referred to as Paur is officially known as Puar in the Dragon Ball series. Puar is a small, light-blue creature from Earth who resembles a cat or a rabbit, with a round body, long ears, and a soft, gentle appearance. The creator of the series has stated that the design was intended to look somewhat like a cat, even though Puar is neither a cat nor a mouse. The name is a pun on Pu-erh tea. Puar was born in Age 740, stands about 37 centimeters tall, and weighs about 9 kilograms, and the character shows almost no signs of aging over the course of the story.
Puar's background begins before the main events of the series, when the character attended a special academy for shape-shifting creatures known as the Southern Shapeshifter School. Puar completed the full course of training there and graduated, which is significant because a fellow student named Oolong was expelled. After leaving school, Puar met Yamcha, and the two became partners in crime, living in the desert and robbing travelers who passed through the Diablo Desert. Their lives changed when they encountered Goku and Bulma during the search for the Dragon Balls, and Puar and Yamcha eventually abandoned their thieving ways and became part of the group's circle of friends.
In terms of personality, Puar is soft-spoken, polite, calm, and notably gentle compared with most other characters in the series. Puar rarely shows aggression and avoids direct fighting, instead relying on cleverness and quick thinking. The character is also very emotionally sensitive, caring deeply about the people close to them, and displays considerable courage when friends are in danger. Puar's main motivation is loyalty: the character is devoted to Yamcha above all and also wants to help and protect the wider group. Puar's history with Oolong left some early friction between them, since Oolong bullied Puar during their school days, but the two eventually became close friends who share a playful and sometimes teasing relationship.
Puar's role in the story is that of a loyal supporting companion and a practical problem-solver rather than a fighter. The character appears throughout the early adventures and regularly uses shape-shifting to help in creative ways, such as disguising, spying, creating distractions, and rescuing others. One of Puar's most notable contributions occurs during the chaos at Pilaf's castle, when Puar transforms into a giant pair of scissors and cuts off Goku's tail to stop his Great Ape rampage, effectively saving the whole group. Puar also teams up with the young warrior Upa to defeat a vampire opponent at Fortune Teller Baba's palace, and during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Puar carries the injured Yamcha to the hospital by transforming into a flying carpet after his leg is broken. When Yamcha is killed by a Saibaman during the Saiyan invasion, Puar is devastated and faints from shock, and in the anime even tries to set out for space in hopes of helping to bring him back. Later in the series, Puar is turned into chocolate by the villain Majin Buu but is revived along with everyone else on Earth. As the story shifts toward battles of ever-increasing power, Puar appears less frequently, but remains part of the supporting cast in later installments and continues to age very little.
The relationship with Yamcha is the emotional core of Puar's character. The two share one of the longest-lasting friendships in the series, beginning as a partnership between desert bandits and evolving into a lifelong bond of mutual support. Puar understands Yamcha's feelings better than most, including his fear of women, and consistently puts his well-being first. Puar also has a significant connection to Oolong, as they trained at the same shapeshifting school, and their contrasting levels of discipline and skill, with Puar having completed the training and Oolong having failed, defines much of their dynamic. Within the larger group, Puar is a trusted friend to Goku, Bulma, and the others, and when Bulma and Yamcha's romantic relationship ends, Puar leaves Bulma's home to continue living with Yamcha.
Puar's development over the series is subtle but meaningful. The character begins as a desert thief and gradually becomes a loyal and trusted member of the group, illustrating a clear capacity for change and growth. This evolution from a life of crime to a life of friendship and support reflects the redemptive themes that run through the early part of the series.
Puar's notable abilities include an innate power of flight or levitation, as the character is almost always seen hovering in the air at around the height of a human head. The signature ability is shape-shifting, which allows Puar to transform into nearly anything, including other people, animals, and inanimate objects, with no time limit on how long a form can be held. This sets Puar apart from Oolong, whose transformations are limited and require rest. Puar can also use the functions of whatever form is taken, such as flying as a carpet or cutting as scissors, but physical strength is not increased by transforming, and Puar cannot become something that would be consumed, like food or fuel. These abilities make Puar a valuable strategic asset even without any real combat power.
