Description
Namu is a warrior from a small, impoverished desert village that has been struck by a severe and prolonged drought. With his people on the brink of dying of thirst, he travels to the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, the World Martial Arts Tournament, with the sole purpose of winning the prize money to buy water and save his community. He is a tall man with brown skin, a long face, small eyes, and a small red dot on his forehead known as a bindi. He typically wears a turban, a simple monastic robe, and a flowing cape, reflecting his ascetic lifestyle.
Namu is a stern, disciplined, and pure-hearted individual. He follows a monastic code, likely rooted in Buddhism, and is deeply uncomfortable with physical temptations or distractions of the flesh. His personality is quiet and serious, and he does not fight for personal glory or enjoyment but out of a sense of duty and responsibility toward his people. Despite his serious demeanor, he is honorable and respectful toward his opponents. He is capable of immense focus, as demonstrated when he closes his eyes in battle to block out visual distractions and relies entirely on his other heightened senses to perceive and counter his opponent's movements.
Motivated entirely by the survival of his village, Namu enters the tournament with a desperate determination. He advances through the preliminaries and into the main bracket. In the quarterfinals, he faces the fighter Ranfan, who attempts to distract him by removing her clothing. Uncomfortable but resolute, Namu closes his eyes and uses his sharpened senses to land a finishing blow and win the match. In the semifinals, he confronts the young Son Goku in a fierce aerial battle. Namu unleashes his signature technique, the Tenku X-Ji Ken, also known as the Cross Arm Attack or Heaven Cross, where he leaps high into the air and dives down with his arms crossed in an X shape, aiming to strike his opponent's throat and knock them unconscious for ten days. Goku manages to kick him just before he hits the ground, sending Namu out of the ring and securing victory.
Defeated and without the prize money, Namu is devastated and prepares to return to his village empty-handed. However, the disguised tournament champion Jackie Chun, secretly the master Muten Roshi, reads Namu's thoughts and understands his noble intentions. Roshi gives Namu a Hoi-Poi Capsule that can shrink a large supply of water for easy transport, asking only that Namu impersonate Roshi in the audience to protect his secret identity. Namu gratefully accepts and returns to his village with the water, successfully ending the immediate crisis.
In a later filler episode, Namu is seen again when the drought returns. He is rescued by Goku after being attacked by a pterosaur, and together they discover that a group of monsters led by Giran has been blocking the river with a dam. Goku destroys the dam with a Kamehameha, restoring the water flow permanently. During this time, it is shown that Namu possesses a pure enough heart to ride the Flying Nimbus.
Namu returns for the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, telling Goku and Roshi that this time he has come simply to enjoy the tournament. He is matched against Tenshinhan in the preliminary rounds. Tenshinhan, intending to send a harsh message to Goku, brutally beats Namu unconscious, nearly killing him. Shortly after the tournament, Namu is killed by the demon Tambourine, acting under orders from King Piccolo to eliminate all martial artists capable of using the Evil Containment Wave. He is later resurrected when Shenlong is summoned to revive all of King Piccolo's victims.
Many years later, during the battle against Kid Buu, Namu hears Goku's plea for energy to form a Spirit Bomb. Recognizing his old rival's voice, he immediately raises his arms and contributes his energy, helping to summon the power needed to destroy the villain. He also makes a brief appearance in Dragon Ball GT, seen with a thick beard and mustache as Goku gathers the remaining people of Earth before the planet explodes.
Key relationships include his rivalry and eventual friendship with Goku, whom he respects deeply despite losing to him. He shares a bond of gratitude with Master Roshi, who saved his village. His opponents Ranfan and Tenshinhan serve as contrasts to his disciplined nature. His ultimate loyalty, however, lies with his village and its people, who are the driving force behind every action he takes.
Regarding abilities, Namu is an expert martial artist with a focus on aerial combat. His heightened senses allow him to fight effectively even without sight. His most famous techniques are the Tenku X-Ji Ken and the more powerful Cho-tenku X-Ji Ken, in which he ascends to great heights and descends with tremendous force, arms crossed, to deliver a devastating strike capable of rendering an opponent unconscious for ten days. He is also shown to possess remarkable jumping power and the ability to move with afterimages. His pure heart qualifies him to ride the Kinto Un.
