Description
Mai, also known as Femina in some adaptations, is a character who appears throughout the Dragon Ball series, from the original manga to Dragon Ball Super. She is best known as the sole human member of the Pilaf Gang, serving as the loyal, competent right-hand to the diminutive Emperor Pilaf.
In her first appearance during the original Dragon Ball series, Mai is introduced as a tall, beautiful woman with a stern and calculating demeanor. She typically wears a military-style trench coat adorned with a red star insignia, complementing her long black hair and use of firearms and gadgetry. This aesthetic gives her the look of a classic spy or secret agent. Despite her serious appearance and intelligence, Mai is prone to the same comedic failures as her partners, which became a recurring hallmark of the group.
One of the most defining moments for Mai occurs in the events leading to the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. After Emperor Pilaf successfully gathers the Dragon Balls and wishes for youth, the magic backfires, transforming Mai, Pilaf, and Shu into small children. In the present timeline of Dragon Ball Super, this leaves Mai with the physical appearance of a girl around the age of Trunks, despite being chronologically older (approximately 41 years old at the time of her de-aging). This wish serves as the primary reason for her youthful appearance in the modern era.
Her role in the story significantly evolves from a minor antagonist to a more developed supporting character. Initially, her motivation was purely to help Pilaf gather the Dragon Balls and achieve world domination. However, after being rejuvenated, the group becomes less villainous and more of a nuisance. During this period, a notable dynamic forms between Mai and the young Trunks. Initially embarrassed by his attention, Mai eventually develops a close bond with him, becoming a friend and later a romantic interest.
The most dramatic development for the character occurs through her Future Timeline counterpart. In the dark world ravaged by Goku Black and Zamasu, the Future Mai becomes the leader of the human resistance. Unlike her present-day self, this version is a young woman fighting for survival alongside a teenage Future Trunks. Their relationship is a deep, serious partnership born of necessity and trust, where Mai acts as a fighter and strategist rather than a comedic sidekick. She demonstrates immense bravery by risking her life to save Trunks, using her signature weapon, a shotgun, against god-like adversaries.
Regarding abilities, Mai stands out precisely because she lacks the superhuman ki manipulation or martial arts skills of the main cast. Her notable abilities revolve around her intellect and resourcefulness. She is an expert marksman, proficient in various firearms, and skilled in espionage and technology. Throughout the series, she frequently relies on gadgets, vehicles, and mech suits to compensate for her physical limitations. Her true strength lies in her unwavering courage and loyalty, whether she is serving Pilaf's silly schemes in the present or leading a desperate guerrilla war in the future.
