Description
Shenron is the eternal dragon summoned from the seven Dragon Balls of Earth, a central mystical figure in the Dragon Ball narrative. Created by the planet's guardian, Kami, Shenron was designed to inspire courage and grant hope as a reward for those who undertook the difficult quest to gather the seven scattered orbs. His name is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese "Shénlóng," which translates to "Divine Dragon" or "Dragon God".

Visually, Shenron is a colossal, serpentine creature resembling an Eastern dragon. He lacks wings and instead possesses a long, powerful body covered in green scales, with a yellow underbelly. His appearance is further defined by sharp teeth, vivid red eyes, long flowing whiskers, a snout with crescent-shaped nostrils, and brown antlers like a stag. His tail alone comprises roughly three-fourths of his total length. When he is summoned, the sky darkens as if night has fallen, a phenomenon that reverses upon his departure.

Shenron possesses a distinct and multifaceted personality. He is generally courteous and well-mannered, aiming to grant wishes in the most beneficial way for the summoner and offering advice against impractical requests. However, he is also known for having a short temper and an aggressive side, often growing impatient and threatening to leave or punish those who delay in stating their wish. This impatience is notably more pronounced than that of Porunga, the Namekian dragon. While typically composed in the presence of mortals, his demeanor changes drastically when faced with divine beings of immense power, such as the God of Destruction, Beerus. In such encounters, Shenron becomes visibly terrified and submissive, showing profound and fearful respect. Despite being good-natured at heart, Shenron acts as a neutral entity, obligated to grant any wish within his power regardless of the morality of the summoner or the wish's intent. This neutrality has led him to serve both heroes and pure evil villains, including King Piccolo, who destroyed him after his wish was granted, and Frieza's forces.

The primary role of Shenron is to serve as the mechanism for fulfilling the desires of the Dragon Ball collector. A summoner can command him to grant one, two, or three wishes depending on the power of his current creator. He abides by a strict set of limitations. His power is directly tied to the life force and strength of his creator; he cannot grant a wish that would exceed the power of the Namekian who created him, nor can he act if his creator is dead. He is unable to affect beings more powerful than his creator, nor can he repeat the same type of wish, such as resurrecting the same person twice. He also typically cannot restore to life those who died from natural causes like illness or old age. Despite these rules, Shenron has demonstrated remarkable abilities, including restoring planets, removing bombs from androids, making trans-universal travel possible, granting eternal youth, and even providing divine knowledge on achieving transformations like Super Saiyan God.

Key relationships define Shenron's existence. His most crucial bond is with his creator. Originally created by Kami, Shenron was destroyed by King Piccolo but later resurrected by Kami as a reward for Goku's bravery. When Kami later fused with Piccolo, Shenron ceased to exist again until a new guardian, Dende, recreated him. Under Dende's guardianship, Shenron's capabilities were upgraded, allowing him to grant up to three wishes, though reviving a large number of people consumes the energy of two wishes. Shenron also has a counterpart in Porunga, the dragon of Namek, who possesses different rules and capabilities.

Throughout the story, Shenron's role and abilities have developed and expanded. His original limitation was a single wish per summoning. After being revived by Dende, his power increased, allowing for multiple wishes and a shorter cooldown period for the Dragon Balls in certain circumstances. His capacity to act has also slightly expanded over time; for instance, he was later able to revive Frieza long after his death, a feat that previously seemed beyond his power. This evolution ensures that Shenron remains a relevant and powerful, albeit bound, entity as the scale of threats and challenges facing the universe grows.

His most notable ability is wish-granting, which is the core of his existence. The summoning ritual requires all seven Dragon Balls to be gathered and the incantation spoken. Once a wish is granted, the Dragon Balls scatter across the planet and turn to stone for a period of time, preventing their immediate reuse. Beside his magical abilities, as a dragon he is immensely large and powerful in a physical sense, though he seldom engages in combat. In one of the few instances where he was attacked by a smaller dragon, he responded with a blast of energy, demonstrating an offensive capability far beyond most mortals. However, his true power and purpose always return to the ancient, mystical act of granting a wish, making him the ultimate reward for the persistent and the final hope in times of catastrophic peril.
