Description
Mestre Tartaruga, also known as the Turtle Hermit, is a central figure in Dragon Ball as the founder of the Turtle School and the creator of the Kamehameha technique. He is an elderly martial arts master who has lived for over three hundred years, having trained under the legendary Mutaito. As a young man, he witnessed Mutaito sacrifice himself to seal the Demon King Piccolo using the Mafuba, an event that deeply shaped his sense of responsibility. After that battle, Mestre Tartaruga dedicated his life to mastering martial arts and later established his own school on a remote island, where he tutored students such as Grandpa Gohan, the Ox‑King, and eventually Son Goku, Kuririn, and Yamcha.

His personality is a striking blend of profound wisdom and comedic lechery. He often spends his free time watching adult magazines or making inappropriate advances toward attractive women, yet this behavior is balanced by a genuinely kind and selfless nature. He believes in the philosophy that martial arts training should build character, humility, and a love for life, not just physical strength. His motivations center on passing down the values of the Turtle School and ensuring that his students never become arrogant or complacent. This is best illustrated when he disguises himself as Jackie Chun to compete in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, deliberately defeating Goku and Kuririn to teach them that there will always be stronger opponents to strive against.

Throughout the original Dragon Ball series, Mestre Tartaruga is a pivotal mentor and fighter. He guides Goku and his friends through their earliest training, teaches them to control their ki, and participates in major battles against the Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo. He even attempts to use the Mafuba again against Piccolo Daimaō, knowing it may cost him his life, showing his unwavering courage. In Dragon Ball Z, his direct fighting role diminishes as newer, more powerful enemies emerge, but he remains a respected advisor and a source of moral support. He often provides comic relief but also demonstrates his enduring loyalty, such as when he encourages Gohan and the others during the Cell and Majin Buu arcs.

His relationships are key to his development. He shares a lifelong rivalry with Tsuru‑sennin, the Crane Hermit, and a deep bond with his sister, the fortune‑teller Baba. He treats Goku and Kuririn almost like grandchildren, taking pride in their growth while still teasing them. His companion, a talking sea turtle named Tartaruga, lives with him on Kame House, and the two share a simple, contented life.

A significant evolution occurs in Dragon Ball Super, particularly during the Tournament of Power. Recognizing that his old weaknesses could jeopardize the team, Mestre Tartaruga undergoes rigorous training to control his desires and refines his techniques. In the tournament, he surprises everyone by eliminating several stronger opponents through strategy, experience, and masterful use of the Mafuba. His performance earns praise even from the God of Destruction Beerus, reaffirming that wisdom and skill can compensate for raw power.

His notable abilities include the Kamehameha, a powerful energy wave that he invented after fifty years of practice; the Max Power form, which drastically increases his muscle mass and strength; and the Mafuba, the dangerous sealing technique he inherited from Mutaito. He is also skilled in the Bankoku Bikkuri Sho, an electric shock wave, and can ride the Kinto‑un cloud, fly, and use various ki‑based attacks. Despite being surpassed in pure power by many later characters, his combat intelligence, centuries of experience, and mastery of technique make him a formidable and enduring figure in the Dragon Ball universe.
