Description
Kame Sennin, known in English as Master Roshi and also referred to as the Turtle Hermit or Muten Roshi, is a legendary figure in the martial arts world. Born in Age 430, he is over three hundred years old by the time he is introduced, yet his age belies his incredible power and influence. As a young man, he was a student of the great martial arts master Mutaito, alongside his rival, Tsuru Sennin, the future founder of the Crane School. He was also the first person to successfully climb Korin Tower and train under the feline deity Korin, a feat that solidified his status as a premier warrior of his era. He is the founder of the Turtle School, a martial arts discipline that would come to shape the next generation of Earth's mightiest defenders.
Physically, Kame Sennin is a short, bald man with a thick white beard and mustache. He typically wears sunglasses, colorful and often casual beach attire, and in his early appearances, a heavy turtle shell on his back as a training weight. While his usual frame is lean and aged, he can undergo a dramatic physical transformation called MAX Power. By concentrating his ki, his muscles expand to a massive, imposing size, significantly increasing his strength and power output to perform techniques at their maximum potential. Despite his aged appearance, he is a martial arts prodigy, famously inventing the Kamehameha, a powerful energy wave technique that took him fifty years to master but which became a fundamental skill for countless warriors who followed.
His personality is defined by a striking duality. On the surface, Kame Sennin is a comically lecherous old man, obsessed with beautiful women, pornography, and television programs featuring female aerobics. He constantly makes clumsy advances on female characters like Bulma and Launch, often resulting in comedic physical punishment. This facet of his character is so pronounced that he was once tricked into accepting bribery in the form of viewing a young woman's underwear. However, beneath this comedic exterior lies a profoundly wise, perceptive, and courageous master. His philosophy of martial arts is encapsulated in his training mantra: work hard, study well, eat and sleep plenty—a principle that emphasizes a balanced, healthy life as the foundation for strength. He is deeply dedicated to the cultivation of character over mere combat skill, believing that a pure heart is more important than a powerful punch.
His primary motivation throughout the story is to nurture and protect the next generation of martial artists. He takes on disciples not simply to teach them how to fight, but to mold them into good people. This dedication is so strong that in the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, he disguised himself under the alias Jackie Chun to compete against his own students, Goku and Krillin. His goal was to defeat them and prevent them from growing arrogant and complacent after winning the tournament too easily. While he enjoys the leisurely life of reading, playing video games, and napping on his remote island home, Kame House, he remains a steadfast guardian of Earth. He was willing to sacrifice his life using the Evil Containment Wave in a desperate attempt to reseal the evil King Piccolo, an act of heroism that ultimately cost him his life temporarily.
Kame Sennin serves as the foundational mentor for the series' main heroes. He is the master who trained Grandpa Gohan and the Ox-King, and later took a young Goku and Krillin under his wing, pushing them through grueling, unorthodox training regimens such as delivering milk across dinosaur-infested islands and plowing fields with their bare hands, all while wearing heavy shells. His relationship with his sister, the fortuneteller Uranai Baba, is another notable familial link. He also maintains a close, if sometimes strained, relationship with his rival, Tsuru Sennin, whose violent and unscrupulous methods directly oppose Kame Sennin's philosophy of martial arts as a means for personal growth and justice.
While his prominence in combat waned as newer, cosmic-level threats emerged, the character underwent a significant development resurgence in later series. It was revealed he had secretly continued his training, honing his skills and martial arts instincts to a new level. In the Tournament of Power, he demonstrated a form of automated movement that allowed his body to dodge attacks without conscious thought, a technique that mirrored the divine Ultra Instinct. This comeback re-established him not just as a historical relic, but as a surprisingly relevant and powerful warrior who continues to push his own limits.
Kame Sennin's arsenal of abilities is vast and varied. Beyond the iconic Kamehameha, he possesses techniques like the Thunder Shock Surprise, a powerful electric cage attack; the Hypnosis and Sleepy Boy techniques for incapacitating opponents; and the Drunken Fist, an unpredictable fighting style. The Evil Containment Wave, a technique passed down from his own master Mutaito, is a last-resort sealing ability with a high risk of killing the user. He also masters fundamental skills like the Afterimage Technique, the Paralysis Technique to freeze opponents in place, and the ability to read minds. His lifelong dedication to martial arts grants him incredible tactical genius and a deep understanding of ki, making him far more formidable than his slight frame would suggest.
