Description
Brian J. Mason is a primary antagonist from the original Bubblegum Crisis series, first appearing as a high-level executive within the powerful GENOM corporation. His past is directly tied to the origin of the Knight Sabers, as he is the man who murdered Dr. Katsuhito Stingray, the scientist who created the android labor force known as Boomers. Following this assassination, Mason stole Dr. Stingray's Boomer technology, an act that would eventually lead to the formation of the Knight Sabers by the doctor's daughter, Sylia Stingray.
In terms of personality, Mason embodies the ruthless and ambitious corporate shark. He is a cunning and vindictive power-player who serves as a trusted employee to the GENOM chairman, Quincy Rosenkreutz, but secretly harbors ambitions to usurp the chairman and take control of the corporation for himself. He is depicted as clean-cut and prefers to operate from the shadows, sending others to do his dirty work while he orchestrates events from a distance. His motivations are driven by a cold desire for power and control. In some interpretations, he is obsessed with the idea that Boomers are the next step in human evolution and wishes to transcend his own humanity to become a god-like being.
Within the story, Mason serves as the main villain for the first three episodes of the original series. He is frequently seen venturing out to acquire valuable Boomer technology, which consistently puts him into conflict with the Knight Sabers, who seek to stop GENOM's illegal and destructive activities. Anticipating the physical threat posed by the Knight Sabers, Mason invests in powerful Boomer bodyguards, though they are ultimately destroyed in their encounters. His schemes include overseeing urban renewal projects that forcibly evict citizens and eliminating anyone who becomes a threat to his plans.
A key relationship Mason has is with Sylia Stingray, the leader of the Knight Sabers. Their conflict is intensely personal, as Mason murdered her father and stole his life's work. This animosity culminates in a one-on-one duel atop the GENOM tower, where Sylia manages to stab Mason in the throat, seemingly killing him. He also has a relationship with the chairman, Quincy, to whom he must answer, though he secretly despises the old man.
Following his apparent death at Sylia's hands, Mason undergoes a significant development. It is generally accepted that he had been planning for this eventuality and somehow succeeded in transferring his personality, memories, and consciousness into a powerful Boomer body. He later resurfaces under the new name Largo, becoming a god-like entity capable of immense destruction and serving as the primary villain for the remainder of the series.
Mason possesses notable abilities primarily stemming from his corporate position and his technological resources. Before his transformation, he was capable of donning his own advanced hardsuit to engage in direct combat with Sylia. After becoming Largo, he is portrayed as an extremely powerful being, capable of mentally linking with satellite weapons to vaporize multiple GENOM towers in an instant, representing the ultimate fusion of a human mind with Boomer technology.
