Description
Linna Yamazaki is a twenty-two-year-old member of the Knight Sabers who serves as the team’s close-quarters combat specialist. She lost her parents at the age of fifteen when a rampaging boomer, damaged during the Great Kanto Earthquake, wreaked havoc across MegaTokyo; the newly formed AD Police was unable to contain the situation. Despite this tragedy, Linna’s natural optimism prevented her from becoming bitter. She pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a world-class entertainer, training extensively in dance. When she auditioned for a musical revue, the judges were dissatisfied with her performance, shattering that ambition. At that low point, Sylia Stingray noticed Linna’s excellent reflexes and strong will and recruited her into the Knight Sabers.
Linna is practical to the point of sometimes seeming superficial. She is fickle and highly materialistic, often concerned with money, clothes, men, and her car, and she has a reputation for being the most socially conventional and “normal” member of the team. However, she is also honest, polite, fun-loving, and genuinely sympathetic toward people in trouble. Her understandable concerns and warmth make her an endearing presence. Among the Knight Sabers, she maintains one true passion: dance. Her fighting style is flamboyant, energetic, and up close, drawing on her dance-honed agility and technical precision. While not as physically strong as Priss, she is a far better technical fighter, and her acrobatic skill is second to none.
Linna works as an aerobics instructor to support herself. Her key relationships within the Knight Sabers include a playful, comic dynamic with the team’s hacker, Nene, and a heartfelt loyalty that underpins pivotal story arcs, such as those involving Irene and Vision. As the story progresses, Linna’s constant desire for money leads her to switch careers to stockbroker consulting in the sequel series Bubblegum Crash. When crimes committed by the Illegal Army caused her tech stocks to plummet, she resigned from that position and rejoined the Knight Sabers.
In combat, Linna dons a green hardsuit originally equipped with “ribbon cutters”—long, electrically charged nanomolecular ropes mounted behind the helmet that can slash through boomers and other high-tech opponents. She also uses explosive “knuckle bombers” mounted on the gauntlets, finger-mounted triplet lasers, and, in the Bubblegum Crash series, electrically charged twin wire-daggers replace the earlier weapons. Her suit is designed to take advantage of her agility and grace, granting enhanced jumping, running, radar sense, and sealed-system capabilities. Later models provide improved initiative and firepower. Her role in the Knight Sabers is that of the athletic, close-range fighter whose precision and acrobatics complement the brute force of Priss, the leadership of Sylia, and the technical support of Nene.
