TV-Series
Description
Minoru Kokubunji is a supporting character in Chobits, known within the series as a child prodigy in the field of personal computers, or persocoms. At the age of twelve, he is remarkably wealthy and lives alone in a large house, attended by several persocoms that function as maids. He is short for his age, standing at 145 centimeters, with dark hair and eyes, and carries himself with a calm composure that belies his youth. Online, he operates under the alias M and is considered a leading expert on persocom technology on specialized message boards.

His outward personality is typically reserved, analytical, and soft-spoken, often approaching problems related to computers with a level of detachment expected of a genius. However, this cool demeanor is a carefully maintained exterior. Beneath it lies a deeply emotional core, primarily shaped by profound personal loss. Minoru comes from a broken home, with his parents having divorced, but the most impactful event in his life was the death of his older sister. To cope with his grief and loneliness, he channeled his considerable talents into creating a custom-built persocom named Yuzuki. He designed her physical appearance to mirror that of his late sister and programmed her with self-teaching software, hoping she could act as a replacement and fill the void left in his life.

Because of his own experience, Minoru initially serves as a pragmatic foil to the protagonist, Hideki Motosuwa. When Hideki becomes anxious about his growing romantic feelings for the persocom Chi, Minoru warns him against falling in love with a machine, believing such a relationship can only lead to heartbreak. He views persocoms as sophisticated tools, and his relationship with his own creations is meant to be professional. This philosophy is challenged by his own behavior, as he is extremely protective of Yuzuki and prone to emotional outbursts whenever she is in trouble or distress, a mirror to the very attachment he warns others about.

His primary motivation throughout the story is twofold. Initially, he is driven by a desire to perfect Yuzuki as a replica of his sister, but he is also intensely curious about Chi. When Shinbo and Hideki approach him because their own persocoms cannot analyze Chi, Minoru becomes fascinated by her unique architecture. He is instrumental in advancing the plot by hypothesizing that Chi might be a Chobits, a legendary type of persocom said to possess true free will and emotion. His research into Chi's origins inadvertently forces him to confront his own unresolved feelings about his sister. As he studies Chi and observes Hideki's purely affectionate relationship with her, he begins to realize the futility and unfairness of trying to make Yuzuki into an exact copy of a human being.

Key relationships define his character arc. His friendship with Hideki is central, as they bond over their shared, unconventional love for their persocoms. More important is his relationship with Yuzuki. Over time, he grows to understand that while she was built to resemble his sister, she has become her own unique entity through her learning abilities. He eventually acknowledges that no one can replace his sister and accepts Yuzuki for who she is, not as a substitute but as someone he cherishes deeply on her own terms. This realization marks his primary development, moving from a boy trapped in the past to one capable of forming new, genuine bonds in the present. In terms of notable abilities, Minoru possesses genius-level intelligence in computer engineering and programming, capable of building and customizing advanced persocoms from scratch, a feat far beyond the average person in his world.
