TV-Series
Description
Kotoko is a laptop-sized persocom, a type of personal computer android, from the anime Chobits. She was custom-built by the technician Yoshiyuki Kojima, giving her specifications far above those of standard laptop models such as Sumomo. Despite her small stature, she possesses advanced processing power and a strong aptitude for research and data analysis.

Kotoko originally served her creator Yoshiyuki, but after a series of events she was transferred to Hideki Motosuwa so that her memory records of past incidents could be preserved. Kotoko is governed by a fundamental programming directive to always speak the truth, no matter the circumstances, and to automatically perform searches whenever she encounters something out of the ordinary.

In terms of personality, Kotoko is serious, analytical, and often cynical, especially when confronted with what she perceives as irrational behavior from those around her. She contrasts sharply with the hyperactive Sumomo and frequently expresses annoyance at the chaos of the Motosuwa household. However, when engaged in a research task, she becomes deeply focused and can display a dry, sarcastic wit. Her honesty can come across as blunt, but it also makes her a reliable source of facts.

Kotoko’s motivations are largely rooted in her programming. She is compelled to seek out information and to report it truthfully. Beyond these built‑in drives, she exhibits a sense of duty to her current owner and a curiosity about the mysteries surrounding the unique persocom Chi.

In the story, Kotoko plays a supporting role that advances the plot through her research. She is among the first to confirm that Chi is a Chobit, a legendary type of persocom capable of independent thought and emotion. Her automated search functions uncover crucial details, such as the unusual power lines in Chitose Hibiya’s apartment, which lead to further discoveries. Her truth‑telling ability also provides key clarifications at important moments.

Kotoko’s relationships are shaped by her pragmatic nature. With Yoshiyuki, she functions as a tool, loyal while under his ownership. After being transferred to Hideki, she remains somewhat aloof but eventually cooperates with his group. She finds Sumomo particularly exasperating and dismisses Chi’s early behavior as insane, though she later accepts both as part of her everyday environment. Her interactions are defined by her analytical outlook and her unwillingness to soften the truth.

Over the course of the series, Kotoko does not undergo a dramatic transformation, but she transitions from being a mere instrument of her creator to a more integrated member of Hideki’s circle. Her exposure to the different personalities around her slightly moderates her detachment, and she becomes more involved in the group’s efforts.

Kotoko’s notable abilities include high‑level computational and research functions that surpass those of standard laptop persocoms. Her truth‑telling programming ensures the reliability of any information she provides, and her automatic search capability allows her to detect and investigate anomalies without being directly instructed. These features make her an effective investigator within the narrative.
