Judeau joined the Band of the Hawk early on, bringing knife-throwing skills honed as a circus tumbler with traveling performers. He carried elf dust obtained during his circus years, later using it medicinally for the group. Recognizing his own limitations, he chose to follow Griffith, believing him the pinnacle of excellence worth supporting.
Within the Band, Judeau served as a scout and reconnaissance expert. His combat style blended agility with dual swords and precise throwing knives, a skill he taught to Guts. He possessed a perceptive and easygoing personality, often mediating conflicts between volatile members like Corkus. This emotional awareness let him detect unspoken dynamics, such as the developing relationship between Guts and Casca before they acknowledged it.
Judeau harbored unrequited feelings for Casca throughout his service. Despite this affection, he prioritized her well-being, encouraging her connection with Guts. He gave Casca his elf dust to heal Guts' injuries and later advised Guts to take Casca away from the diminishing Band, recognizing Griffith's incapacitation would prevent her fulfillment. He stated Casca's serious nature would clash with the carefree life of thieves he planned with other survivors.
His resourcefulness proved vital during critical missions. He participated in infiltrating Wyndham's Tower of Rebirth to rescue Griffith, suggesting taking Princess Charlotte hostage as insurance—a plan Casca initially rejected. In the subsequent sewer escape, he identified their attackers as Bakiraka assassins and used sparks from his thrown knives to illuminate the darkness, enabling the group to counterattack.
After Griffith's rescue and physical decline, Judeau assessed Griffith's severed tendons, confirming him incapable of combat. He contemplated forming a thief band with other survivors while urging Guts to leave with Casca for her safety and emotional future.
Judeau met his end during the Eclipse sacrificial ritual. As demonic Apostles slaughtered the Band, he prioritized Casca's survival, declaring the band could endure through her. He rescued her on horseback, fighting through attacking creatures until one mangled his arm. Despite his injuries, he disabled an Apostle by throwing a knife into its eye, allowing Casca to deliver the killing blow. In his final moments, he acknowledged Casca's emotional pain but could not confess his feelings before dying in her arms.
