Description
Lucas Wykes is a major antagonist in The Beginning After the End. He is the second son of the noble Wykes family and the younger half-brother of Bairon Wykes, a Lance. Lucas is a half-elf, which places him in a precarious social position within his own family, and he has ochre hair and golden eyes. His magical affinity is fire, a rare trait for an elf, and he awakened his mana core at an unusually early age of eight. By the time he enters the main storyline, his core has reached the yellow stage, and he is officially recognized as an A-rank adventurer. He attends Xyrus Academy, where he initially appears as a talented but arrogant student.
Lucas’s personality is defined by deep-seated insecurity, selfishness, and a desire for validation. Growing up as an illegitimate half-elf in a powerful noble household, he developed a severe inferiority complex. He craves recognition and power, often trying to prove himself through cruelty and domination rather than genuine achievement. He is quick to resort to cowardly tactics when cornered, as shown during the Dire Tombs raid when he attacked his own teammates and used them as bait to escape a dangerous monster. This incident reveals his fundamental lack of loyalty and his willingness to sacrifice others for his own survival.
His motivations are driven by resentment, especially toward Arthur Leywin, whom he views as a rival. Lucas becomes obsessed with surpassing Arthur and winning the affection of Tessia Eralith, whom he sees as a trophy rather than a person. This obsession ultimately leads him to betray Dicathen entirely. During the Xyrus Academy invasion arc, Lucas aligns himself with Draneeve, an agent of Alacrya, and helps the Vritra forces attack the academy. His betrayal is premeditated and directly endangers innocent students. In the climax of that arc, Arthur confronts and kills Lucas in a brutal fight, ending his role in the story.
In terms of development, Lucas does not experience redemption. He remains consistently self-serving and arrogant, and his death marks the end of his character arc. His key relationships include his half-brother Bairon Wykes, a high-ranking Lance who is both a source of comparison and a reminder of Lucas’s own inadequacies; his rivalry with Arthur Leywin, which escalates from academic competition to outright treason; and his fixation on Tessia Eralith, which fuels many of his cruel decisions. Lucas also briefly works alongside Draneeve as a means to gain power.
Lucas’s notable abilities center on his fire magic, which he uses offensively and in combination with his enhanced mana core. He has consumed elixirs and beast cores to accelerate his growth, making him stronger than many of his peers. However, his combat effectiveness is undermined by his cowardice and lack of strategic discipline. Despite his early promise, his reliance on shortcuts and his corrosive personality prevent him from reaching his full potential.
