Description
Elijah Knight is a major supporting character in The Beginning After The End, whose journey is marked by a profound and tragic transformation. Introduced as a solitary orphan and a close friend to the protagonist, Arthur Leywin, Elijah’s true nature as the reincarnated soul of Nico Sever fundamentally reshapes his role in the story.
Born with his past-life memories sealed away, Elijah was an orphan raised by Elder Rahdeas in the dwarven kingdom of Darv. His early life was shrouded in mystery, with his origins unknown even to himself. He suffered from painful flashes that would occasionally surface, hinting at a forgotten past. As a young man, Elijah became an adventurer, where his path crossed with Arthur Leywin. The two became fire-forged friends during a disastrous dungeon expedition, during which Elijah chose to stay and nurse Arthur back to health instead of fleeing. This act of loyalty cemented their bond, and Arthur later sponsored Elijah to attend Xyrus Academy, where he lived with the Helstea family.
In his initial appearance, Elijah is reserved and solitary, but he blossoms into a more sociable and loyal individual after befriending Arthur. He is a logical and trustworthy young man who, despite his intelligence, often lets his heart guide him in personal matters, making him vulnerable. A recurring and endearing trait is his awkwardness and envy regarding romance. He frequently laments his lack of success with girls, feeling overshadowed by Arthur’s natural charisma and relationships with noble figures like Tessia Eralith. He desires to stand on his own, prove his worth, and step out of his friend's shadow.
Elijah’s primary motivation early on is to grow stronger and become a reliable friend to Arthur. He is driven by a need for belonging and a genuine desire to help others, although his motives can sometimes be tinged with a wish for recognition. This simple aspiration is horrifically subverted following the attack on Xyrus Academy. Witnessing his friend Tessia in grave danger at the hands of Lucas Wykes, Elijah’s sealed memories violently resurface. An unknown force overtakes his consciousness, causing him to manifest dark, black metal spikes before collapsing and being abducted by the Alacryan assailants.
This event marks the death of Elijah’s identity and the rebirth of Nico. It is revealed that Elijah was always Nico, a reincarnated individual from Arthur’s past life on Earth. As Nico, he was once Arthur’s (then King Grey) best friend, engaged to a girl named Cecilia. When Cecilia was killed during a duel with Grey, Nico was consumed by hatred and blamed his friend for her death. In his new life as Elijah, the powerful mage Agrona had kept these memories suppressed, allowing the Elijah persona to develop independently as part of a larger scheme.
Once his memories are restored, Nico’s motivations are driven by vengeance and a desperate, obsessive desire to reincarnate his lost love, Cecilia, using Tessia Eralith as a vessel. Rising to the rank of a Scythe, a powerful commander in Alacrya’s army, he becomes a bitter and single-minded antagonist. His friendship with Arthur curdles into a deep-seated rivalry, fueled by centuries of misplaced blame and the pain of his past life. However, this hatred is not absolute. When Arthur later defeats him and Cecilia heals his mana core, Agrona’s mental manipulation is broken, allowing Nico to regain his suppressed memories of his life as Elijah. Overwhelmed with guilt for his actions and realizing he and Cecilia have been pawns of Agrona, his motivations shift once more, leading him to secretly plot against his former master.
His key relationships are the primary drivers of the plot. His bond with Arthur Leywin is the central axis of his character arc, evolving from brotherly friendship to bitter enmity and, finally, to a complicated, guilt-ridden alliance. His relationship with Tessia Eralith is tragically twisted, as he views her not as a person but as a necessary vessel for Cecilia’s resurrection. His guardian, the dwarf elder Rahdeas, is later revealed to have been a knowing agent in his manipulation, raising him on behalf of Agrona.
In terms of abilities, Elijah is a skilled earth magic user, which he learned during his upbringing among the dwarves. His true, unique power, however, is his deviant ability to conjure and manipulate metal, a skill that manifests in the form of dangerous, black spikes. This power is deeply connected to his true lineage and is similar to the abilities granted by the Vritra, the ruling clan of Alacrya to which Agrona belongs. After fully embracing his identity as the Scythe Nico, his powers grow significantly, making him a formidable foe on the battlefield.
