Description
Beryl Gardenant is a middle-aged swordsman and the proprietor of a small, rural dojo in the remote village of Biden in the kingdom of Rebiris. He has a plain and unassuming appearance, with brown hair showing signs of grey, a well-trained physique, and fair skin. At the start of the story, he is around forty-five years old and believes his days of ambition are behind him, having resigned himself to a quiet life of teaching local children self-defense.

Beryl’s personality is defined by his genuine humility, kindness, and gentle nature. He is a classic example of a humble hero who consistently downplays his own abilities, referring to himself as just a simple old man from the countryside. This self-deprecation is so profound that he genuinely believes his skills are only slightly above average, a misconception that persists because his entire worldview has been shaped by his isolated village and his extraordinarily strong father. He finds it difficult to refuse requests for help and is a deeply caring individual, especially towards his students, for whom he feels a strong paternal responsibility. Despite his easygoing and laid-back demeanor, he is a ferocious warrior when angered or when someone he cherishes is threatened, showing a cold and unwavering resolve in combat. He is also notably oblivious to romantic advances, failing to recognize the clear affection shown to him by several of his former female students, often dismissing such notions as inappropriate due to his role as their teacher and the significant age gap.

The primary motivation driving Beryl is his desire to pass his swordsmanship skills on to the next generation, a goal he holds above personal glory. He takes immense pride in watching his students grow and succeed, even as he remains blind to his own role in their accomplishments. His journey begins not out of a personal quest for adventure, but because he is effectively pushed out of his comfort zone. His former student, Allucia Citrus, now a Knight Commander, arranges for his appointment as a special instructor for the Royal Order of Knights, presenting him with a royal decree he cannot refuse. Adding to the pressure, his father, Moldea, expels him from the family dojo, giving him the ultimatum to find a wife in the capital before he can return. Consequently, Beryl travels to the capital of Baltrein to take up his new role, where he reunites with many of his accomplished former pupils.

In the story, Beryl serves as the experienced protagonist and a mentor archetype. His role is to act as an anchor of practical wisdom and overwhelming skill in a world of flashy magic and youthful prodigies. At the capital, he becomes an advisor to the Liberion Order of Knights and a teacher at the Mage Academy, instructing a new generation of elite warriors who are initially skeptical of his unpretentious demeanor. His key relationships are primarily with his former students, who revere him as the greatest swordsman they have ever known. These include Allucia Citrus, the knight commander who harbors deep romantic feelings for him; Surena Lysandra, a top-ranked black-level adventurer he rescued and trained as a child; and other accomplished figures like the mage Ficelle and the squire Curuni. His relationship with his father, Moldea, is one of deep respect and an unfulfilled desire to finally best him in a sparring match.

Beryl undergoes significant development as he gradually comes to terms with the reality of his own power. Initially convinced he is a mediocre swordsman, he slowly realizes his true standing as he effortlessly defeats high-ranking knights, elite adventurers, and supernatural monsters that others cannot. A turning point occurs when he finally defeats his father in a sparring match, forcing him to fully acknowledge his mastery. This leads to a slow but steady increase in his self-esteem, shifting from seeing himself as talentless to recognizing himself as a swordsman of considerable, perhaps unparalleled, strength. He also begins to confront his personal regrets, such as a youthful failure as an adventurer, and finds new purpose and goals beyond simply being a teacher.

Beryl’s notable abilities lie not in flashy techniques or magical power, but in the refined fundamentals of swordsmanship, making his style a perfect example of "boring, but practical". His greatest asset is his extraordinary kinetic vision and ability to analyze an opponent instantly. He can observe their breathing, footwork, and minute tells to construct a perfect counter-attack within nanoseconds. He possesses superhuman reflexes and nerves of steel, allowing him to remain calm and formulate strategies even against faster, stronger, or magically enhanced enemies. He is a master of the counter-attack, using his defensive prowess to exploit the smallest of openings. His skill is so refined that he can cleanly cut through a target with a completely dull blade without even knocking over a straw bundle. After his standard longsword is destroyed in battle, he commissions a new, powerful blade forged from the bones and claws of a named griffin, which possesses exceptional sharpness and magical properties.
