Description
Present Mic, whose real name is Hizashi Yamada, is a professional hero known as the Voice Hero who appears in the anime My Hero Academia: Vigilantes in two distinct forms: as an active pro hero in the story's present timeline and, through flashbacks, as a student at U.A. High School. He is a tall, slim man with long blond hair worn spiked upward, and he carries himself with a flashy, theatrical energy that suits his twin careers as an English teacher and a radio DJ.

His background is expanded considerably in Vigilantes, which looks back at his high school years. During that time, Hizashi was a classmate of Shota Aizawa, and the two shared a close friendship with another student, Oboro Shirakumo, who used the hero name Loud Cloud. The three friends planned to open their own hero agency together after graduation. That dream ended in tragedy when Shirakumo was killed during a work-study patrol with Aizawa, and Hizashi was present at the scene of the incident. This event is central to his past and left a lasting mark on his friendship with Aizawa, whom he continued to quietly watch over in the aftermath. In the present-day setting of Vigilantes, he appears alongside Aizawa as a dependable pro hero who takes part in operations and supports other heroes during major incidents.

In terms of personality, Hizashi is the opposite of his friend Aizawa in nearly every way. He is loud, cheerful, outgoing, and always ready to raise the energy of a room, whether he is hosting his radio program, teaching a class, or announcing a situation during hero work. His high-spirited behavior is not shallow showmanship, however. Beneath the noise and enthusiasm, he is an intensely loyal and caring person who uses his bright demeanor to encourage others and to support the people he is closest to. His tendency to fill silence with chatter and humor complements Aizawa's quiet, pragmatic seriousness, and the two are frequently depicted balancing each other's shortcomings.

His motivations grow out of his relationships and his sense of purpose as a hero. He is driven to protect others with his abilities and to honor the dream he shared with his friends in their youth. His loyalty to Aizawa is especially strong, and much of his quieter, more protective side in Vigilantes comes from his desire to be there for his friend after the loss of Shirakumo. He does not let past grief define him, but it reinforces his commitment to his role as a hero and as a reliable companion.

His role in the Vigilantes story is significant because he connects the past and the present. The flashbacks featuring his student days provide important context for Aizawa's background and explain why his friend became the cautious, reserved figure he is in the main timeline, while his appearances as an active pro hero show him applying his skills in real operations. He also has a personal tie to Aizawa's identity as a hero: Hizashi is the one who gave Aizawa the hero name Eraser Head, an episode that demonstrates how close the two have been since their school days.

His development across the story shows him maturing from an energetic student full of plans for the future into a seasoned professional who understands loss and responsibility. The death of his friend and the changes it caused in Aizawa shaped his perspective, yet he retains his optimism and uses it as a strength. His journey is one of steady, quiet loyalty as much as loud, public confidence, and his friendship with Aizawa remains the emotional core of his character in this series.

His notable ability is his Quirk, called Voice, which allows him to emit shouts of extreme volume. The sound he produces is powerful enough to rupture eardrums even from a distance and can create shock waves capable of destroying buildings, making it a formidable wide-area and omnidirectional attack. He can also control high and low pitches freely, and the sound can be used to disorient enemies and block out other noises. The device around his neck is a microphone and directional speaker that further amplifies his Quirk. His power manifested at the moment of his birth, when his first cries burst the eardrums of his parents and the attending doctor. The Quirk does have a known limitation: sound carries poorly through the ground, so attacks from underground or from targets separated from him by layers of earth are difficult for him to affect. Outside of combat, he relies on the same voice as a professional tool, hosting his own late-night radio program and working as an English teacher, making him one of the more publicly visible heroes in the story.
