Description
Kazuho Haneyama, known by her stage name Pop Step, is a high school girl who leads a double life as an underground "guerrilla idol" in the spin-off series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Standing 158 centimeters tall with a birthday of May 28th, she presents two vastly different faces to the world. In her daily life, she is a modest, somewhat disheveled student with messy hair and glasses, appearing shy, unconfident, and easy to overlook. However, when she transforms into her Pop Step persona, she hides her face behind heavy makeup and an eye mask, donning a revealing, devil-themed costume with bat-wing motifs and twin pigtails to create a mischievous and provocative "little devil" image. Her singing voice is not technically proficient and could even be described as tone-deaf, but her energetic stage presence, acrobatic leaps, and rebellious charm have earned her a small but dedicated fan following.
Her motivations are deeply rooted in a childhood incident that combined her dream of performing with a profound personal debt. As a young girl inspired by celebrities on television, she chose to pursue a career as a performer rather than a hero. While practicing her quirk after a rainfall, she slipped and fell into an overflowing river, where she was rescued by a boy named Koichi Haimawari. The boy left her with an All Might hoodie to keep warm before rushing off, and she never had the chance to properly thank him. From that day forward, she remained intrigued by her savior, carrying a torch for him that mixed gratitude, admiration, and a budding crush. Years later, living as the illegal idol Pop Step, she reunited with Koichi but was too shy and embarrassed to reveal that she was the child he had saved, leaving her feelings unspoken as they began to interact as acquaintances.
Within the story, Pop Step is a core member of the Naruhata Vigilantes, the informal team formed alongside Koichi, who takes the alias "The Crawler," and the masked brawler Knuckleduster. Unlike her two partners who engage enemies directly, she has no direct combat power and rarely fights villains head-on. Instead, she functions as the team's strategic support, using her public visibility as an idol to gather information from civilians and fans, calm panicked crowds, and organize evacuations during crises. Her ability to interact with ordinary people without raising suspicion allows Koichi and Knuckleduster to focus entirely on fighting without worrying about civilian casualties. She often carries a first aid kit to tend to minor wounds and uses her quick thinking to defuse tense situations, with Koichi once noting that her support was surprisingly crucial during a difficult fight. One of her key relationships is with Makoto Tsukauchi, a college student who becomes her manager and helps her secure legitimate performance opportunities, such as the Marukane Department Store concert where she leads the musical group Feather Hats.
Koichi Haimawari is the most significant figure in her life, representing both her unrequited romantic affection and the heroic ideal she admires. Her feelings for him are a source of internal conflict, as she becomes visibly jealous when other girls show interest in him, yet she often hides her nervousness behind passive-aggressive teasing and insults, leading to playful arguments between them. For his part, Koichi remains largely oblivious to her romantic interest, treating her as a close and trusted friend. Despite this emotional turmoil, her loyalty to him is absolute, and she willingly follows him into dangerous situations.
Kazuho's notable ability is her quirk, called "Leap". This power grants her the ability to jump incredible distances and heights by kicking off from a solid surface, and it also cushions her landings so she takes no fall damage when descending from a jump she initiated herself. This makes her highly mobile in urban environments, able to traverse rooftops and make dramatic entrances during her concerts. However, the quirk has a critical limitation: it only protects her and provides propulsion when she jumps voluntarily. If she is thrown, pushed, or falls due to an external force, she has no way to stop her descent and will plummet like an ordinary person, making her vulnerable in mid-air without a foothold. Softer surfaces like mud also reduce the power of her jumps.
Her character undergoes a dramatic and traumatic development during the Final Performance Arc. Due to the machinations of the villain Number 6, she is forcibly possessed by Kuin Hachisuka's Queen Bee quirk, which transforms her into a corrupted, unwilling antagonist named Bee☆Pop. In this state, her costume gains bee-themed modifications, and she gains the ability to control massive swarms of bees that become hyper-aggressive when she sings. She can also modify these bees into "Bomb Bees," attaching small explosives to their abdomens to create destructive explosions on command. Under this possession, she is forced to attack the very neighborhood she once helped protect, with the bees serving as a dark reflection of her performer identity. Koichi ultimately saves her from this fate, but her rescue comes at a severe cost: she loses her left eye and requires extensive rehabilitation, leaving both physical and emotional scars as permanent reminders of her ordeal. This arc represents the peak of her development, transforming her from a background performer seeking confidence into a fully realized character who has endured tragedy and survived, redefining what courage means in an imperfect world.
