Description
In the spin-off series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, which takes place several years before the main story, Shota Aizawa, known as the pro hero Eraser Head, is depicted as a younger but already formidable hero. The narrative explores his past as a student at U.A. High School, where he was a member of Class 2-A. During this time, he was a close friend of classmates Oboro Shirakumo and Hizashi Yamada, who would later become the pro hero Present Mic. This trio was known as a group of troublemakers, with Aizawa specifically noted for his lack of motivation and difficulty fitting in, an aura similar to that of later student Hitoshi Shinso.

A tragic event during their school days profoundly shaped Aizawa's personality and career. While interning, the three friends faced a powerful villain. During the incident, Shirakumo was killed by falling debris after saving children, a loss that had a devastating impact on Aizawa. Following this trauma, Aizawa became isolated and threw himself into intense training. Plans he had with his friends to open a hero agency together were abandoned, and he vowed to become an independent, underground hero focused entirely on anti-villain combat, a decision that solidified his solitary and serious nature.

In the main timeline of Vigilantes, Aizawa is an active pro hero investigating the distribution of a dangerous drug known as Trigger. He often operates in the Naruhata district, where he crosses paths with the vigilante known as The Crawler, whose real name is Koichi Haimawari. While Aizawa is officially tasked with apprehending illegal vigilantes, his pragmatic nature leads him to tolerate and sometimes cooperate with Koichi when their goals align, such as during crises involving Trigger-enhanced villains or the mysterious entity known as the Anonymous. Aizawa is frequently seen using the coffee shop run by the Hotta brothers as a de facto office, a place he frequents because he enjoys their coffee.

Key relationships from his past continue to influence him. He remains close with Present Mic, who is one of the few people who understands the weight of Shirakumo's death. He also interacts with his former upperclassman, Nemuri Kayama, the pro hero Midnight, who suggests he consider a teaching position at U.A. High School. His interactions with the friendly vigilante Koichi, whom he finds somewhat stressful due to Koichi's persistent greetings, eventually lead him to reflect on his past and make the decision to accept the teaching job, marking a turning point in his life.

Aizawa's abilities in Vigilantes are already highly developed. His Quirk, Erasure, allows him to temporarily nullify another person's Quirk simply by looking at them, though this ability is ineffective against mutant-type Quirks that physically alter the body. He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat and masterfully wields a carbon fiber capture weapon, often called his binding cloth, which he uses to restrain enemies and for mobility. Because his Quirk requires him to keep his eyes open, he suffers from dry eyes and must use eye drops. As an underground hero, he shuns the spotlight and media attention, believing it interferes with his work, a trait that remains consistent throughout his career.
