Description
Funa Uozumi is a character who appears in the story as the seemingly simple and stoic maid living in the home of Nanoka's grandfather. With her wide, unblinking eyes and expressionless demeanor, she initially comes across as an emotionless and peculiar housekeeper, yet she is remarkably vigilant and dedicated to looking after Nanoka's health, persistently serving her a homemade green drink every day.

Her true nature, however, is far from ordinary. Funa is not a human being but a shikigami, a spiritual familiar or living doll created by the onmyoji Mao. In her original form, she was a small wooden carving of a crucian carp, a detail reflected in her name as "Funa" specifically refers to this type of fish. Mao breathed life into this wooden fish and cast it through a dimensional gate into the future, where it transformed into her current humanoid appearance. Upon arriving in Nanoka's time, Funa first disguised herself as a nurse at the hospital where Nanoka's grandfather was waiting before using her abilities to seamlessly integrate into the family as their maid.

Funa's core motivation and purpose are directly tied to Nanoka's survival. She was created specifically to watch over and protect Nanoka after the child was attacked by the cat demon Byoki, which left Nanoka with a cursed blood affliction. The green drink she faithfully prepares each day is not merely for general health but serves a critical function: it weakens the influence of the cursed blood flowing in Nanoka's veins, which would otherwise attract dangerous demons. For eight years, she has acted as a silent guardian, protecting Nanoka from supernatural threats without the girl or her family ever realizing the truth.

Throughout the story, Funa serves as a vital link between Nanoka and the supernatural world, particularly to her creator, Mao. Her role evolves from a hidden guardian to a more open ally once her identity is revealed. She provides Nanoka with crucial information about her condition, explaining the purpose of the green drink and the nature of the curse. She demonstrates protective abilities, such as using her powers to counter demonic barriers and rescue Nanoka from danger. Her key relationship is undoubtedly with Nanoka, whom she serves loyally and refers to as her "lady." Funa herself acknowledges that her sense of being alive and active comes from her duty to Nanoka, suggesting a deep, almost existential connection to the girl she is sworn to protect. While she maintains a formal and reserved relationship with Nanoka's grandfather, her entire existence revolves around the mission given to her by Mao.

Funa shows little conventional emotional development or change in personality; she remains consistently stoic and devoted. However, her depth is revealed through her unwavering dedication and the significant secret she has carried for nearly a decade. As a shikigami, her notable abilities extend beyond her protective powers. As a being created from a doll, she is functionally ageless and does not tire in the way a human would, remaining motionless and sleeping when Nanoka is not around to give her purpose. Her powers include disguising herself, influencing others to gain trust, creating barriers, and using supernatural force to drive away intruders, all in service of keeping Nanoka safe from the lingering threat of the cat demon's curse.
