Description
Nanoka Kiba is the heroine of the manga and anime series Mao. She is a junior high school student living in modern-day Japan whose life was forever altered by a catastrophic accident on September 1, 2011. While riding in a car with her parents to visit her hospitalized grandfather, a massive explosion engulfed the vehicle, killing both of her parents. Nanoka was thrown free and briefly glimpsed a monstrous creature in the fiery wreckage before losing consciousness. She survived and was raised by her grandfather and his live-in maid, Fune Uozumi. Told that she was a weak and sickly child, she was made to drink a pungent green beverage daily, which was meant to suppress latent powers rather than improve her health.
Eight years later, drawn by curiosity about the blast and the sinkhole it left, Nanoka returned to the abandoned shopping arcade at Gogyo Town. There she passed through a mysterious portal and found herself in the Taisho era of Japan. She met Mao, a centuries-old exorcist, who saved her from a yokai. Together they discovered that the explosion that killed her parents was a side effect of a battle between Mao and the cat demon Byoki, which occurred during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The force of that battle rippled through a time portal and struck her family’s car. In the accident, Nanoka was also cursed by Byoki: the demon’s blood entered her body, granting her supernatural abilities but linking her fate to Mao and Byoki. The green drink she had been given since childhood was actually designed to keep those powers dormant so that Byoki would not sense her.
Nanoka is outspoken, determined, and brave. She possesses a strong sense of curiosity about her own past and the curse she shares with Mao, leading her to research historical events with her classmate Shiraha when she returns to the modern world. Her motivations are driven by a desire to understand the truth behind the accident and her connection to Mao, as well as to protect those she cares about. As the story progresses, she becomes an active participant in Mao’s investigations of supernatural incidents, often traveling between the present and the Taisho era.
Her key relationships include her growing bond with Mao, whom she initially distrusts but gradually comes to rely on. She also forms a close friendship with her classmate Shiraha, who assists her with historical research. Her grandfather and maid Fune are her only family in the modern world. In the Taisho era, she crosses paths with allies such as Otoya and other members of Mao’s circle.
Nanoka’s most notable abilities stem from Byoki’s blood within her. She possesses superhuman strength and a resistance to poison. When her cursed blood fully awakens, her physical abilities increase dramatically, and her eyes take on cat-like features similar to Mao’s. She is aligned with the earth element, which makes her strong against water-element onmyoji techniques but vulnerable to wood-element attacks. Unlike anyone else, she is able to wield Mao’s cursed sword, Akanemaru, without being killed, and she has used it in combat to save Mao’s life. She also demonstrates impressive martial prowess, often holding her own against yokai and other supernatural threats. Over the course of the story, Nanoka learns to control her powers and train with Mao, steadily growing from a curious schoolgirl into a formidable fighter. Her development is marked by her increasing confidence and willingness to face danger head-on, as well as her deepening understanding of the tangled history that binds her to Mao and Byoki.
