Description
Karashi Nerimaya is a supporting character who serves as a prominent rival and peer to the protagonist. A tall and slim young man with black hair and black eyes, his mouth is often drawn in a smug, grid-like expression, and he is typically seen in formal attire when not in his rakugo performance clothes.

Karashi first appears as a university student who became interested in rakugo through his university’s rakugo club. He found the traditional stories being told there to be unexciting and disconnected from contemporary audiences, which led him to develop his own unique performance style. This approach proved highly successful, and he became a two-time consecutive champion of the prestigious Karaku Cup, a student rakugo championship, earning him the status of a prodigy in the student rakugo world and subsequent offers from major companies.

In terms of personality, Karashi is logic-driven, analytical, and possesses a confident, often arrogant attitude that makes him feel superior to others, a trait reinforced by his championship wins. He takes great pride in his ability to reinterpret classical rakugo stories through a modern and logical lens, treating the craft as a form of precise psychological calculation, and he can be bluntly critical of others. He initially appears as a know-nothing know-it-all but eventually comes to realize his own ignorance when confronted with performances that challenge his perspective.

His rakugo style is defined by updating traditional stories based on his own experiences and contemporary logic, while striving to leave the basis of the original story unchanged. This method has been described as something close to a stand-up comedy performance. He applies a sharp, analytical mind to his storytelling, focusing on modern sensibilities and psychological impact.

Karashi’s role in the story is primarily that of a rival to Akane Osaki, the main character. Their rivalry begins during the Karaku Cup arc, where he aims for a consecutive title with his innovative rakugo. Initially seeing Akane only as a competitor, his convictions are shaken after experiencing her performance and suffering a decisive loss against her. This defeat leads him to respect and admire her skills, transforming their relationship into a friendly rivalry. Following the Karaku Cup, he decides to pursue a professional career and enters the Sanmeitei school, becoming an apprentice zenza, or entry-level performer, under the master Enso Sanmeitei, for whom he holds profound respect.

As a fellow zenza, Karashi works backstage alongside Akane, and the two develop a closer bond. He also shares a significant relationship with Hikaru Koragi, another of his rivals from the Karaku Cup. While they started as competitors, they have grown closer and often go out and perform together, leading others to mistake them for a couple, though they do not explicitly consider themselves friends. Despite his friendly relationship with Akane, his core motivation remains to surpass her, as he holds a strong desire to destroy her in competition and prove himself better. This competitive drive, combined with his technical skill and modern approach, makes him a formidable peer rival and a key character in the exploration of the evolving world of rakugo.
