Description
Io Taurus is a character from the manga series The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch. As a first-year student moving from the middle school division to the high school division at the Royal Diana Magic School, she is a classmate of the protagonist Spica within their witches' gathering. Physically, Io is notable for her tall and well-proportioned figure, standing at 174cm, and she typically wears her long hair in a ponytail. She has a gentle and approachable demeanor, building a wide network of acquaintances within the school due to her warm and helpful nature. However, her outward appearance as a glamorous older sister type contrasts with a personality that is fundamentally innocent, childlike, and pure.
While usually calm and even-tempered, a significant aspect of Io's character is the fierce anger that emerges when someone she cares about is harmed, transforming her into someone as fearsome as a fighting bull. A notable quirk is her fear of ghosts and other supernatural entities. Her background is rooted in a dairy farming family that runs a large牧场 (ranch or pasture), and she often helped with the family business. It was during her youth that she began to experience difficulty controlling her own magical power, which accidentally led to her injuring one of the family's cows. This incident prompted her to leave home and enroll in Diana Academy starting from the middle school division.
Io possesses a distinct and powerful magical ability known as Taurus Magic. This form of enhancement magic allows her to increase the size of her own body, simultaneously boosting her physical attack power and defensive capabilities. A key drawback, however, is that overusing this ability leaves her body temporarily unable to move. Complementing her magic is her natural, superhuman strength, which she often has trouble regulating, leading to accidental destruction of school facilities.
Within the story, Io plays the role of a supportive and friendly upperclassman. She first appears after accidentally crashing through a wall when she falls, a situation from which Spica helps her escape, leading to the formation of their friendship. Her relationships with other characters are central to her role. She is a friend and contemporary of other students like Astraea, the Gemini twins Castor and Pollux, and Hana from her middle school years. She specifically looks up to the school nurse, Dainaben, as a role model. Io also participated in one of the school’s difficult exams, the First Midterm Exam at the Griffon's Nest, where she worked together with Astraea and Pollux Gemini to successfully pass. Her courage is further displayed during an incident when she, alongside Pollux and Spica, was drawn into a magical mirror world while trying to help younger students find a lost dog; there, she joined forces with her peers to defeat the villain. As she progresses through the school, her struggle is to better control her immense power, moving past the childhood accident that originally forced her to leave home and learning to master her formidable Taurus Magic without losing control or suffering from its debilitating side effects. Her name is derived from Io, a figure from Greek mythology who was transformed into a cow, and the English word for the Taurus constellation.
