Description
Heki is a general of the Qin military and the leader of the Heki Army, serving as a recurring supporting character throughout the story. He is born as the first son of the Heki Family, a noble household belonging to the warrior caste of the state of Qin, and is raised in the capital city of Kanyou. Heki begins his military career by becoming a trusted vassal and lieutenant in the personal army of Shou Bun Kun, a high-ranking official in the court of Qin. At a young age, he is present when Shou Bun Kun escorts the future king, Ei Sei, back to the Qin capital after smuggling him out of the rival state of Zhao. Several years later, Heki makes his first major appearance during the rebellion orchestrated by Sei Kyou, where he fights alongside his lord and the young king.
In terms of personality, Heki is portrayed as a serious and forward-thinking individual who possesses unwavering loyalty to both his master Shou Bun Kun and King Ei Sei. He is capable of demonstrating great courage even when faced with overwhelming odds, yet he also frequently shows nervousness and anxiety, especially in high-pressure situations or when confronted with the unexpected. His honest and open demeanor makes him easy to read, which often leads to others teasing him or catching him by surprise. Heki is deeply caring and takes on a protective, almost brotherly role toward the younger protagonists Shin and Ka Ryo Ten, looking out for their well-being both on and off the battlefield. He also harbors a notable and obvious crush on the mountain tribe queen Yo Tan Wa, which begins the moment he first sees her unmasked.
Heki's primary motivation stems from a profound sense of powerlessness he experiences during the Sei Kyou Rebellion. After witnessing how the key factors in their victory were the king's leadership, the mountain tribesmen's strength, and Shin's fierce struggle, Heki realizes that he and Shou Bun Kun were unable to provide substantial support as retainers. This realization drives him to resolve to climb to even greater heights, with Shou Bun Kun aiming to become a chancellor while Heki sets his sights on the pinnacle of the military: becoming a Great General who can serve as a symbol of his majesty's military might.
Throughout the story, Heki rises through the ranks of the Qin military, progressing from a 1000-man commander to a 3000-man commander and eventually to a general. He participates in numerous major campaigns. As a 1000-man commander under the legendary Duke Hyou at the Battle of Dakan Plains, he demonstrates tactical awareness by identifying a weakness in the enemy's pincer attack and providing crucial cavalry support. During the Sanyou Campaign, he serves under General Ou Sen, who uses him as convincing bait after Heki proves himself by effectively utilizing the terrain against enemy forces. In the Coalition Invasion arc, he fights under General Mou Bu at the Battle of Kankoku Pass and later serves as a commander defending the city of Sai from the invading army led by Ri Boku. Heki also takes on the role of Commander-in-Chief of a 40,000-strong subjugation army, successfully pushing back a 70,000-strong rebel force and retaking the city of Tonryuu, where he accurately predicts enemy movements to defeat and slay the rebel general Ryuu.
Key relationships define much of Heki's role in the narrative. His bond with Shou Bun Kun is that of a loyal vassal to his lord, and he sweats almost constantly when stressed in his presence. Heki forms a close friendship with a fellow noble named Shou Kaku, who becomes one of his most trusted comrades. His relationship with Shin and Ka Ryo Ten is particularly notable, as he views them as younger siblings and consistently tries to guide and protect them. His admiration for Yo Tan Wa is a recurring personal trait, and he even learns to speak the mountain tribesmen's language fluently, which proves valuable in later campaigns.
In terms of development, Heki's journey is defined by a gradual but steady growth from a capable but unremarkable noble soldier into a reliable general with genuine achievements. He is not portrayed as exceptionally talented or powerful compared to the monstrously capable commanders around him, but he is consistently shown to be a hardworking and fundamentally competent officer who has mastered all the fundamentals of warfare. His experiences on the battlefield, including surviving the Sei Kyou Rebellion and numerous other brutal campaigns, cause him to grow facial hair as a mark of experience and maturity.
Regarding notable abilities, Heki is a reliable military commander whose strength lies in his thorough mastery of orthodox tactics rather than any flashy or unconventional approach. He possesses a great understanding of tactical knowledge and typically fights battles using standard by the book formations and strategies. His leadership skills are well-developed, as he leads his forces from the front lines and has a knack for maneuvering his cavalry to reinforce allied positions during pivotal moments. He is capable of maintaining high morale among his troops even in times of crisis. Specific tactical applications include effectively using the Wedge Formation for cavalry charges and employing a defend and repair tactic where archers are embedded into shield units to draw in and cut down enemy cavalry charges. His army is noted for being able to execute these orders faster and more smoothly than any other Qin army. In physical combat, Heki is a proficient swordsman trained in the standard Qin military style, though he lacks explosive power and his martial prowess is considered average by the standards of general-level officers. He is capable with a glaive, having broken through enemy lines and, in a notable feat, collaborated with the mountain warrior Danto to surprise and slay the powerful Quanrong king Rozo with a single strike. Overall, Heki is regarded by those around him, including the talented strategist Ka Ryo Ten, as an officer with true achievements under his belt, and his consistent if unspectacular reliability makes him a valuable asset to the Qin war effort.
