Description
Kaine is a commander in the Zhao military and serves as the primary bodyguard and most trusted lieutenant of the great general Ri Boku. She holds the rank of a 5000-Man Commander, a testament to her skill and the responsibility she carries within the Zhao hierarchy. Her appearance is that of a slim, young woman with long, dark hair typically tied back. She wears practical robes with armor over her torso, but notably does not wear a helmet, which distinguishes her from many other high-ranking officers.

Kaine’s background is forged in tragedy. She grew up in the northern province of Ganmon, a region constantly ravaged by the Xiongnu, a fierce horse-riding tribal people. As a child, her parents were brutally killed in one of these raids, leaving her orphaned and filled with a deep, burning hatred for the Xiongnu. This personal history is the key to understanding her initial worldview and her powerful, unyielding loyalty to Ri Boku. He was the general assigned to defend her homeland, and unlike his predecessors who sought glory in direct battle, he implemented a strategy of evacuation and defense that avoided unnecessary casualties. At first, Kaine despised this approach, viewing it as cowardly while she thirsted for revenge. She eventually came to understand that Ri Boku had suffered a similar loss, having lost his own family to reckless revenge, and that his philosophy of preserving life was born from that pain. This realization marked a turning point, transforming her from a vengeful youth into his most devoted follower.

In terms of personality, Kaine is defined by her serious, dedicated, and fiercely protective nature. Her entire existence revolves around Ri Boku, and she is famously intolerant of anyone who insults or disrespects him, regardless of their status. While she is capable of recognizing talent in others and has even formed friendships with enemies like Ka Ryo Ten of Qin, her loyalty to her lord is absolute. She is organized and vigilant, constantly acting as Ri Boku's shadow. This dedication is so profound that it has been shown to be romantic; Kaine is deeply in love with Ri Boku and has fantasized about a peaceful life with him, far from the battlefield.

Her role in the story is intrinsically linked to Ri Boku. She acts as his liaison, herald, and guardian, often explaining his strategies or reacting to events to provide context for the reader. On the battlefield, she commands her own unit of cavalry, specially trained in mountain horsemanship, and is often placed in dangerous vanguard positions. Despite her devotion, she is not a passive character and has occasionally challenged Ri Boku’s decisions or volunteered for critical defensive missions when he is at a disadvantage.

Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with Ri Boku is the axis of her existence, a mix of master-servant, father-daughter, and unspoken romantic affection. She shares a contentious but comedic relationship with her fellow subordinate, Fu Tei, whom she frequently punches or berates for his brash and disrespectful behavior. A surprising relationship is her friendship with Ka Ryo Ten; the two met under non-combat circumstances and formed a mutual respect that leads them to refuse to kill each other when they meet as enemies.

Throughout the series, Kaine shows a degree of development, though her core identity as Ri Boku’s protector remains unchanged. She has moments of significant action, such as leading a secret army through a mountain pass during the Coalition Invasion Arc, where she personally climbed the walls of Sai and nearly captured Ka Ryo Ten. During the political turmoil in Zhao, she leads a desperate attempt to rescue Ri Boku from imprisonment, even being seriously wounded in the effort. In a later battle, she demonstrates her ultimate loyalty by physically shielding Ri Boku from arrows, putting her own life directly in harm's way to preserve his.

Her notable abilities are primarily martial and tactical. She is a capable commander, able to lead thousands of soldiers effectively, and holds her own on the front lines. Her proficiency with dual swords makes her a versatile and dangerous fighter. Furthermore, her experience in the north has made her a master of mountain horsemanship, allowing her to lead cavalry in difficult terrain where others could not. While she is not a genius strategist on the level of Ri Boku, she possesses a sharp tactical awareness and is more than capable of commanding independently during battle.
