Description
Chou Ga Ryū is a general from the state of Zhao. His past is deeply intertwined with one of the most legendary figures of the previous era, as he served directly under Rin Shou Jo, a member of the esteemed Three Great Heavens. In that capacity, Chou Ga Ryū was not merely a subordinate but a trusted deputy and a key member of an elite group known as the Rin Family's Ten Heroes, where he fought alongside his close comrade, Gyou’un. This history places him in a lineage of formidable warriors and strategists, and his own abilities are considered to be on par with renowned figures such as Rin Ko and Kai Shi Bou, who served as the Four Heavenly Kings of another great general, Ren Pa.
In terms of personality, Chou Ga Ryū is best characterized as a patient and cunning strategist. He has a marked preference for fighting with traps, schemes, and calculated maneuvers rather than relying solely on brute force. This tactical patience was vividly demonstrated during the Battle at Shukai Plains, where he chose to remain entirely inactive on the first day of combat, carefully observing the flow of battle to gain a decisive advantage for the following days. Despite his typically reserved and calculating demeanor, there are moments when he sheds this cool exterior and fights with great passion, particularly when the situation becomes dire or his pride is on the line. His most defining trait, however, is an unwavering and deep-seated loyalty to his late master, Rin Shou Jo. After Rin Shou Jo succumbed to illness, Chou Ga Ryū and Gyou’un were the only two of the ten deputies to survive their master's passing. The other eight, unable to bear the grief, deliberately sought death in a series of suicidal battles to follow their lord. Chou Ga Ryū, bound by a promise sworn on Rin Shou Jo's deathbed, chose to carry on his master's dying wish. He considers himself the living embodiment of the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of his master and his eight fallen comrades, a conviction that fuels his unbreakable will to fight.
Chou Ga Ryū’s primary motivation stems directly from this profound sense of duty. He does not fight for personal glory or advancement, but to honor the legacy of Rin Shou Jo and to fulfill the oath he made at his master's deathbed. This makes him a formidable and dangerous opponent, as his resolve is fortified by the weight of history and the lives of those he has lost. In the narrative of the Western Zhao Invasion arc, he is summoned by the Zhao commander-in-chief, Ri Boku, to defend the Central Lands against the invading Qin army. During the subsequent Battle at Shukai Plains, Chou Ga Ryū is positioned as a key commander on the Zhao left wing, forced to confront the rising stars of Qin.
His key relationships are central to his character. His bond with Gyou’un is the most prominent; they are depicted as old friends and comrades who share the same history, loyalty, and burden. Together, they form a powerful and experienced core of veteran leadership for the Zhao army, often fighting in concert. His other significant relationship, though one of conflict, is with the young Qin generals, particularly Ou Hon of the Gyoku Hou Unit and Shin of the Hi Shin Unit. He sees them not just as enemies, but as the inheritors of a new era, and his clashes with them are a battle of philosophies and legacies. Development-wise, Chou Ga Ryū appears as a fully realized and seasoned general. His arc does not involve personal transformation but rather the revelation of his past and the immense emotional and psychological weight he carries. The story explores how a man defined by his past confronts the new generation that seeks to overturn everything his master built.
Notable abilities include his high-level tactical acumen. He has been drilled in everything from basic formations to the most intricate strategies by Rin Shou Jo, making him exceptionally adept at predicting enemy movements and laying complex traps. His ability to remain patient and orchestrate near-perfect pincer attacks, as seen in his maneuvers against Ou Hon’s unit, is a testament to his strategic mind. While not primarily a frontline berserker, he is also a capable fighter, having been shown personally engaging in combat and cutting down multiple enemy soldiers. He leads his own formidable army, which includes loyal commanders like Jo Rin and Jo Shou, and commands elite units such as the Dojaku heavy cavalry.
